NVIDIA Neural Texture Compression (NTC) can cut the memory used by textures, but it does not automatically reduce VRAM in every game. It is a developer SDK that stores material textures in a compact neural representation and reconstructs texture values when needed. The largest VRAM savings come from NTC’s inference-on-sample mode; developers must integrate the technology into a game, and sampling from neural textures adds computation.

How NVIDIA Neural Texture Compression works

Games commonly store textures using block-compression formats such as BCn. NTC instead compresses related maps in a material bundle and uses a small, material-specific multilayer perceptron to reconstruct texture values for requested coordinates. NVIDIA’s research describes joint compression of material textures and their mipmap chains, with on-demand, random-access decompression. That lets a renderer request texture data as part of its sampling workflow rather than first expanding an entire image.

The distinction that matters most to players is whether a game keeps the neural representation in memory or converts it to conventional textures when loading.

Inference on load

With inference on load, the game decodes the neural bundle during loading and transcodes it to BCn. The runtime texture-sampling path remains conventional. In NVIDIA’s SDK example, this mode reduces the bundle’s disk size and PCIe traffic, but the resulting BCn textures still occupy the same VRAM as the BCn version.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Inference on sample

With inference on sample, the neural representation remains resident in memory and the GPU reconstructs values as textures are sampled. This is the mode that can reduce the texture data occupying VRAM, but it adds inference work to runtime sampling. NVIDIA says Cooperative Vector hardware can accelerate that work; the SDK also provides DP4a or integer-math fallback paths.

How much VRAM can NTC save?

NVIDIA’s 2025 materials advertise savings of up to 7× in VRAM or system memory at similar visual quality, and up to 8× versus traditional block compression at similar fidelity. Those are vendor figures, not guaranteed whole-game results. The result depends on the assets, quality target, implementation and runtime mode.

NVIDIA’s RTXNTC SDK documentation gives a more concrete example: for a 2K material bundle, BCn uses 12.00 MB in VRAM; NTC in inference-on-sample mode uses 2.50 MB in VRAM; and NTC in inference-on-load mode uses 12.00 MB in VRAM after transcoding. This example illustrates why the mode matters: a smaller neural bundle on disk does not, by itself, mean a smaller texture allocation in VRAM.

The same SDK documentation says about 5 bits per texel can produce results comparable to BCn’s 40–50 dB PSNR range for many real-world material bundles. That is a reported comparison for many bundles, not a promise of identical appearance for every texture or scene. Separately, NVIDIA Research demonstrates an NTC example at four times the resolution, or 16 times the texels, of a BC-high reference while using 30% less memory. That is a project demonstration, not a universal game benchmark.

NTC compared with BCn

Consideration BCn textures NTC textures
Resident VRAM Uses conventional block-compressed texture storage. Inference on sample keeps the compact neural representation resident; inference on load transcodes to BCn and uses BCn-sized VRAM in NVIDIA’s 2K example.
Disk size and PCIe traffic Uses the stored BCn texture data. NVIDIA’s SDK says inference on load reduces disk size and PCIe traffic relative to the transcoded BCn textures; no general reduction figure is stated.
Runtime sampling cost No NTC inference is added to sampling. Inference on sample adds neural-inference work. NVIDIA says Cooperative Vector hardware can accelerate it; DP4a and integer-math fallbacks are also provided.
Load-time work No NTC-to-BCn transcode is required. Inference on load decodes and transcodes the neural bundle during loading.
Visual quality and memory trade-off Provides the reference format in the cited NTC comparisons. NVIDIA reports similar-quality results in its headline claims and SDK examples; actual results depend on content and settings.
Filtering and image stability Not applicable to NTC’s stochastic filtering method. Tom’s Hardware reports that stochastic texture filtering can show visible noise without suitable anti-aliasing in its testing. DLSS cleaned the noise in that tested setup; TAA did not remove it completely.

What hardware and software are required?

NVIDIA’s RTX Kit guide lists Turing or newer GPUs, driver 570 or later, CMake 3.28, Vulkan 1.3 and Windows SDK 10.0.22621.0 for its documented NTC workflow. These are development-workflow requirements, not a promise that every compatible GPU can run every NTC implementation at the same speed.

The SDK documents Vulkan paths and DirectX 12 paths without Cooperative Vector support for shipping. Its DX12 LinAlg path using Shader Model 6.10 is marked preview/testing-only in the repository documentation, which says not to ship products using that path. Performance depends on the API path and available hardware.

Will NTC work in games you already own?

Not unless the game’s developers integrate it. NTC is an SDK, not a driver setting or a GPU feature that retrofits texture compression into existing titles. A compatible GeForce RTX card does not make an unsupported game use neural textures. Developers need to integrate and package the SDK, prepare or compress material bundles, and select a runtime mode.

NVIDIA’s GDC update describes pairing NTC with texture streaming so a game can decompress and cache only the portions accessed. That approach can help manage texture memory, but whether a particular title uses it depends on its implementation.

What NTC could mean for game visuals

Reducing texture memory can leave room for other uses, or let developers spend a fixed memory budget on more detailed textures. NVIDIA Research’s higher-resolution demonstration shows that second possibility; it does not establish how much additional detail a typical game can deliver. A real game’s overall memory use includes more than textures, so a texture-compression ratio should not be read as the same percentage reduction in total VRAM use.

The trade-off is therefore not simply “smaller textures, more frames.” Inference on sample may lower texture residency while adding runtime work, and its filtering can require suitable anti-aliasing. Inference on load avoids NTC inference during sampling but, after conversion to BCn, does not provide the same resident-VRAM reduction in NVIDIA’s example.

How widely is NTC available?

NVIDIA provides the RTXNTC SDK and technical demonstrations, but the cited materials do not establish a representative cross-game benchmark or a universal count of games using NTC. Treat the large savings figures as potential demonstrated by NVIDIA, not as a feature to expect in every new release or an upgrade that a GPU driver can enable.
