NVIDIA and its partners are building support for 800-volt direct-current (800 VDC) power distribution to serve increasingly power-dense AI data centers. The proposal moves much of the conversion from individual racks to a shared high-voltage DC backbone, then converts power closer to the servers. NVIDIA’s GTC-era announcements show a growing standards and supplier effort, plus products on a roadmap—not proof that 800 VDC is already widely deployed.

What NVIDIA’s 800 VDC architecture changes

Conventional data-center power paths typically convert incoming AC power through multiple stages before it reaches computing equipment. NVIDIA’s proposed design converts medium-voltage AC centrally into an 800 VDC distribution backbone. DC/DC converters nearer the compute equipment then step the voltage down for server and accelerator components.

The 800 VDC backbone is not necessarily the voltage a GPU uses. NVIDIA’s Kyber material describes a high-ratio conversion near the accelerator, including an 800 VDC-to-12 VDC path. The design’s aim is to move power efficiently across a facility or row at high voltage, then provide the lower-voltage rails required by the server.

Why use a higher-voltage DC backbone?

NVIDIA’s technical rationale is that delivering the same power at higher voltage requires lower current than a 54 V distribution system. Lower current can reduce the amount of conductor material needed and the bulk of cables and busbars. NVIDIA also says centralizing and simplifying conversion can reduce conversion stages and free space for power distribution. These are design claims, not independent field-test results.

In an October 2025 technical blog, NVIDIA described Kyber’s 64:1 LLC converter for stepping 800 VDC down to 12 VDC adjacent to the GPU. NVIDIA reported that this approach delivers higher efficiency in 26% less area than multi-stage approaches. The comparison is NVIDIA’s; the cited material does not independently validate it across deployed data centers.

Why AI data centers are considering 800 VDC

AI systems concentrate substantial electrical demand in racks, and future systems are being designed around megawatt-scale rack power. As rack demand rises, distributing power at lower current may help limit the size of conductors and the space occupied by power equipment. NVIDIA’s 2025 technical material targeted 1 MW IT racks starting in 2027.

NVIDIA also projected up to a 5% improvement in end-to-end power efficiency and up to 70% lower maintenance costs in its 2025 technical blog. Those figures are company projections, not independently confirmed operating results. Actual outcomes would depend on the complete facility design and its equipment.

Two deployment paths: retrofit-friendly racks or purpose-built facilities

NVIDIA describes an evolutionary route rather than requiring every existing facility to be rebuilt at once. A hybrid-compatible power rack is intended to let facilities with AC infrastructure adopt the approach while retaining existing site investments. New AI factories can instead be designed around row-level or facility-scale 800 VDC distribution.

Deployment path What it means What to assess
Hybrid-compatible power rack A rack-based bridge for existing or in-progress AC facilities, as described by NVIDIA at GTC Taipei in June 2026. Compatibility with the facility’s existing electrical plant; where conversion occurs; and whether the rack supports the intended compute density.
Row-level or facility-scale 800 VDC A design that distributes 800 VDC across a row or larger portion of a purpose-built AI facility. Electrical protection and safety design; row capacity; conversion locations; and coordination with the facility’s cooling and rack design.

The path that fits depends on the existing electrical plant, desired rack and row capacity, protection design, and where conversion stages should sit. A facility also has to choose an appropriate lower-voltage DC bus for its server design.

What the GTC-era roadmap establishes—and what it does not

NVIDIA’s March 2026 GTC-era materials described support for future megawatt-class racks, with 1 MW IT racks targeted to start in 2027. In a September 2026 blog, NVIDIA said its MGX-compatible 800 VDC power rack was expected in the second half of 2026, and a row power center supporting up to 2 MW per row was expected in 2027. These are NVIDIA roadmap statements; they do not establish general availability or broad deployment.

NVIDIA also said more than 80 manufacturers and infrastructure companies are building products to OCP specifications. The company says NVIDIA, Google, and Microsoft developed the architecture through the Open Compute Project (OCP), published a joint white paper in March 2026, and published an LVDC Solid-State Transformer Specification v0.3 in July 2026. This demonstrates ecosystem activity, but does not establish that every component is orderable or interoperable in an operating facility.

At GTC Taipei in June 2026, NVIDIA presented MGX-compatible 800 VDC infrastructure as part of its modular AI-factory platform and positioned the power rack as a bridge for existing and in-progress AC facilities. NVIDIA vice president of data center infrastructure Vladimir Troy said, “800 VDC unlocks the compute performance and power density required for AI at scale.” That is NVIDIA’s rationale, not an independent assessment.

Which companies are supporting the plan?

NVIDIA’s 2025 and 2026 technical and partner materials describe participation across silicon, power components, and data-center systems. The September 2026 announcement names NVIDIA, Google, and Microsoft in developing the architecture through OCP and reports that more than 80 manufacturers and infrastructure companies are building to its specifications.

At GTC San Jose on March 17, 2026, STMicroelectronics announced 800 VDC-to-12V and 800 VDC-to-6V converter architectures, alongside its previously introduced 800 VDC-to-50V path. ST says the appropriate intermediate bus depends on rack density, GPU configuration, and cooling strategy; these buses are alternatives for different designs, not a single required voltage for every server. ST President Marco Cassis described the converters as supporting “the deployment of gigawatt-scale compute infrastructure,” a supplier statement rather than evidence of deployments at that scale.

NVIDIA’s GTC catalog also included an Eaton-presented session on safety and scalability and a Schneider Electric-presented session on the 1 MW rack and power distribution beyond sidecars. Those session listings establish conference participation, not delivered installations.

What operators should evaluate before adopting 800 VDC

  • Facility compatibility: Determine whether a hybrid-compatible rack can work with the existing AC plant or whether the project justifies a purpose-built DC distribution design.
  • Conversion topology: Map where AC/DC and DC/DC stages sit, and confirm which voltage rails the server and accelerators actually require.
  • Bus selection: Compare 50V, 12V, and 6V intermediate paths against the rack’s density, GPU configuration, and cooling design; ST says more than one bus may be appropriate across different designs.
  • Protection and safety: Validate the electrical protection strategy for the intended voltage and facility architecture. Conference sessions about safety are not a substitute for site-specific engineering.
  • Delivery and interoperability: Treat announced schedules and ecosystem counts as roadmap and standards signals. Confirm product availability, compatibility, and deployment references directly with suppliers before basing a project schedule on them.
