The NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900 XT was a late-2003 AGP graphics card in the NV35-based GeForce FX 5900 family. Its retrospective specification listing gives it a 390 MHz core, DDR memory on a 256-bit interface, and 22.4 GB/s of memory bandwidth. Those figures place it below the GeForce FX 5900 and 5900 Ultra on the listed clock and bandwidth measures, but they do not establish game-performance differences.
What the GeForce FX 5900 XT is
NVIDIA introduced the GeForce FX 5900 generation in May 2003 under the NV35 code name. The XT arrived later: PC Watch’s 2024 chronology lists it in December 2003 as an AGP 8x card based on NV35 and manufactured on TSMC’s 130 nm process. GameSpot’s May 2003 report covers the original 5900 introduction; the later XT’s date and model specifications are listed in PC Watch’s GPU-history table.
The XT is one member of the 5900 family, not a synonym for the original GeForce FX 5900 or the faster-clocked 5900 Ultra. Its “XT” label identifies a distinct model with its own listed specifications.

| Memory capacity | 128 MB on the AOpen Aeolus FX 5900 XT reviewed by CDRInfo; not established here for every partner card | CDRInfo search-result extract for that named board |
Memory capacity should be treated as board-specific rather than assumed from the GPU name. CDRInfo’s 2004 result describes the AOpen Aeolus FX 5900 XT as having 128 MB DDR and a 256-bit architecture; check an individual card’s exact board model and specification before treating that capacity as universal.

How it compares with the GeForce FX 5900 and 5900 Ultra
PC Watch’s retrospective table lists the following clock and bandwidth figures. The figures are specifications, not benchmark results.
| Model | Listed core clock | Listed memory bandwidth |
|---|---|---|
| GeForce FX 5900 XT | 390 MHz | 22.4 GB/s |
| GeForce FX 5900 | 400 MHz | 27.2 GB/s |
| GeForce FX 5900 Ultra | 450 MHz | 27.2 GB/s |
In this comparison, the XT has a lower listed core clock and memory bandwidth than the 5900 and 5900 Ultra. The table does not provide game tests, so it cannot show how many frames per second separate the models in a particular title, resolution, driver, or system configuration. Memory capacity is also not included as a family-wide comparison because the evidence here identifies it only for one XT partner board.

Features NVIDIA advertised for the FX 5900 family
NVIDIA’s June 2003 GeForce FX 5900 product overview describes family-level support and features including CineFX 2.0, DirectX 9.0 pixel and vertex shader support, OpenGL 1.4, high-level shader language support, a 256-bit memory interface, and UltraShadow. These are NVIDIA’s advertised platform features, not independent measurements of performance or image quality on every partner card.
NVIDIA positioned UltraShadow for shadow-intensive games, naming Doom III and Abducted as examples in the overview. That is historical product messaging; it does not by itself demonstrate how a particular game performed on the XT.

Does the FX 5900 XT work in a modern PC?
The historical specification identifies an AGP 8x interface, but that fact alone cannot establish compatibility with a particular current computer. A definitive answer depends on the motherboard’s graphics slot and support, the operating system and driver situation, and the exact card. The evidence cited here does not verify present-day driver availability or compatibility with any specific modern system.
Before planning a build, confirm the exact motherboard and card documentation, including whether the system supports the card’s AGP interface and whether the operating system you intend to use has a suitable driver. Do not infer compatibility from the card’s age, brand, or AGP 8x label alone.

What to check when evaluating a used card
- Verify the exact partner-board model and memory capacity rather than relying on the FX 5900 XT name alone.
- Confirm that the intended motherboard can support the card’s AGP interface.
- Inspect the card’s condition and confirm which accessories are included; current used-card reliability, inventory, and resale value are not established by the historical specifications cited here.
GameSpot reported an expected suggested price of $499 for the initial GeForce FX 5900 design in May 2003. That launch-era figure is for the original design, not the later XT, and is not a guide to current resale value.
