NVIDIA BlueField-3 self-hosted refers to the B3220SH E-Series storage-controller family, designed to manage downstream PCIe devices rather than operate only as a conventional host-attached DPU. Its PCIe Gen 5 x32 interface can act as a root complex, enabling a BlueField-managed system to connect storage devices such as NVMe SSDs; NVIDIA says a configuration can support up to 16 SSDs. The platform targets NVMe-oF, NVMe/TCP, and data-at-rest acceleration.

What “self-hosted” means for BlueField-3

Here, “self-hosted” describes the platform’s PCIe role and system architecture—not a software hosting service or a BlueField card that needs no surrounding server. In a self-hosted configuration, the BlueField PCIe interface can operate as a root complex and control downstream devices. In a typical host-attached arrangement, BlueField is connected to and managed in relation to a separate host system.

That root-complex role lets system designers attach devices such as SSDs and GPUs to the BlueField-managed system. NVIDIA identifies the B3220SH as a storage-focused platform; the ability to attach a device does not, by itself, establish that every server, GPU, or topology is compatible. The specific system design and supported software release matter.

Which B3220SH models are listed?

NVIDIA’s BlueField BMC compatibility documentation lists three B3220SH E-Series storage-controller SKUs. All have 200GbE/NDR200 networking, 16 Arm cores, an integrated BMC, and crypto enabled. The listed memory and heatsink configurations differ:

These are specifications published in NVIDIA’s 2026 BMC compatibility documentation, not independent performance measurements. The two 48GB listings distinguish heatsink from no-heatsink versions; the available listing does not specify a thermal configuration for the 32GB SKU. Confirm the exact part number and cooling requirements with the system vendor before selecting a card.

What is B3220SH designed to do?

NVIDIA describes B3220SH as optimized for NVMe storage systems using integrated NVMe-oF, NVMe/TCP, or data-at-rest accelerators. Its PCIe Gen 5 x32 interface can support up to 16 SSDs, according to NVIDIA. That is a platform capability, not a guarantee that any particular chassis or configuration will accommodate 16 drives: the implemented topology, backplane, cabling, power, cooling, and system support determine what can be deployed.

The root-complex capability also makes downstream GPUs possible in a suitable design. NVIDIA’s cited platform description is storage-oriented, however; it does not establish general-purpose GPU compatibility or performance for a particular workload. Treat GPU attachment as a system-integration question to validate with the relevant server and software vendors.

What software does a BlueField-3 system need?

The software has two sides. NVIDIA defines DOCA-Host as the package installed on the server host. The BF-Bundle runs on the BlueField Arm cores and includes DOCA SDK libraries, drivers, tools, BlueField platform software, and the default Ubuntu 22.04 operating system in the documented package.

For an example of OEM integration, Supermicro lists the NVIDIA BlueField-3 B3220SH as an optional DPU in its SSG-229J-5BE36JBF 2U all-flash NVMe storage server. That is evidence of one server offering, not a claim that the B3220SH is included by default or supported in every storage server.

How does it differ from a standard host-attached BlueField-3?

The main distinction is PCIe system role: B3220SH self-hosted configurations can use BlueField as the root complex for downstream devices, while a conventional host-attached setup places the DPU in relation to a separate host. That changes the storage topology and system-integration decisions. The B3220SH listings also specify 200GbE/NDR200 networking, 16 Arm cores, integrated BMC, crypto enabled, and either 32GB or 48GB of onboard DDR depending on SKU. Confirm the intended PCIe role, device count, cooling variant, and release support rather than treating all BlueField-3 cards as interchangeable.
