What is the NuPhy Gem80?
NuPhy specifies the Gem80 as an 88-key, ANSI 80%/TKL keyboard. It is sold as a customizable kit rather than a complete typing-ready keyboard by default. The manufacturer lists compatibility with macOS, Windows, Linux, Android and iOS. What do you need to add?
For the barebones kit, buy both switches and keycaps separately. NuPhy says neither is included by default.
- Switches: MX-style 3-pin or 5-pin switches are supported by the hot-swap sockets.
- Keycaps: Choose a set that covers an ANSI tenkeyless layout. Check its layout compatibility rather than assuming any full-size or compact set has every required key.
NuPhy’s listing says the kit includes a USB-C data cable, a keycap/switch puller, three extra switches, five silicone sets, a screwdriver and an extra foot-pad set; the tri-mode version also includes a 2.4 GHz receiver. Separately selected add-ons or bundles can change what arrives, so confirm the contents of the exact listing you buy.

Wired-only or tri-mode?
The wired-only and tri-mode configurations differ in connection options. NuPhy lists polling rates by connection for the stated configurations:

How does the mount affect feel?
NuPhy describes the Gem80 as supporting gasket and top mounting, and its listing includes multiple silicone sets and a mount replacement guide. RTINGS describes the stock gasket setup as soft and slightly springy, and reports that the box includes alternative gasket styles and screws for a more traditional top-mounted setup. The practical choice is whether to use the stock gasket arrangement or follow the included guide to try an alternate mount. The kit’s silicone sets provide options, but the available evidence does not establish a measured or universal preference between mounting styles; feel depends on the configuration and the person typing.

Should you buy the NuPhy Gem80?
The Gem80 is a fit for someone who wants a customizable ANSI TKL kit, already has—or is prepared to choose—switches and keycaps, and values a choice of connection and mount configuration. It is less convenient if you want a complete keyboard straight out of the box: the default kit requires separate switch and keycap purchases. Before checkout, confirm the exact configuration, kit contents, keycap layout coverage and whether you need the tri-mode connections.
