“Connected” confirms a link, not an RTK fixed position. An NTRIP client may connect to a caster while corrections fail to reach the receiver; even when they do, the receiver may not reach a fixed ambiguity solution. Check the client or caster status, the receiver’s correction-input status, and the receiver’s solution label as separate things.
What does “connected” actually confirm?
First identify which program displays the status: an NTRIP client, a GNSS utility, the receiver’s web interface, or another application. Then check the receiver’s own status screens. You need to distinguish three observations: whether the client has a caster session, whether the receiver is receiving correction data, and whether its position solution is fixed, float, or another state.
Status labels vary by product. In Trimble’s documentation, “Up and Connected” means connected to a correction source and receiving data. Other documented statuses distinguish an invalid mountpoint, invalid credentials, internet connection failure, and a caster that is not sending data. Those are examples from Trimble, not universal labels. See Trimble’s port configuration documentation.

1. Verify the caster details and mountpoint
Compare the NTRIP client’s host, port, username, password, and exact mountpoint with the details supplied by your correction service. A mountpoint identifies the stream requested from the caster; selecting a valid but unsuitable stream is not the same as confirming that the receiver is using corrections successfully. BKG’s BNC help describes selecting streams by mountpoint, while Trimble documents separate mountpoint and credential errors: BKG Ntrip Client (BNC) Help and Trimble Port Configuration.

2. Check how corrections reach the receiver
If the NTRIP client forwards data to the receiver over a Windows serial connection, verify that it is using the intended COM port. Compare the client’s baud rate, parity, data bits, stop bits, and flow control with the receiver’s serial configuration. BKG’s BNC help covers Windows COM-port forwarding and matching serial settings to the attached receiver. Do not assume a particular COM number or baud rate applies to every device.
If the client connects directly through another supported receiver connection, check that specific data path instead. A successful caster session in one application does not establish that corrections have reached the receiver.

3. Check GGA reporting for a VRS mountpoint
First confirm whether the selected stream is a VRS service. For the VRS workflow described in BKG’s documentation, the broadcaster needs valid NMEA-GGA position information. Check whether the receiver or client is sending that information. BKG describes automatic GGA forwarding and a manual approximate-position option when a serial receiver cannot provide GGA. That option is specific to the documented workflow; it is not a setting to prescribe for every NTRIP stream. See BKG’s BNC help.

Once the transport path is checked, inspect the receiver’s own correction-input status and navigation solution label. If it reports corrections but remains float or otherwise not fixed, consult the manual for that receiver and firmware. Correction-format support, constellation settings, and solution diagnosis are device-specific; there is no model-independent explanation that can be inferred from an NTRIP client’s connection label.

Also confirm that the GNSS antenna is secure and stable, with a good sky view and minimal obstructions. Waveshare’s Q43 Windows setup documentation gives this placement guidance as part of its example workflow; it is not a guarantee that a receiver will reach a fixed solution. See Waveshare’s Q43 Windows documentation.
Use the status pattern to locate the failing layer
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The client does not establish a caster session | Review internet access and the provider’s host, port, credentials, and mountpoint. Use the client’s actual error text; products label failures differently. |
| The client connects, but reports no caster data or an invalid stream | Recheck the exact mountpoint and the caster’s response. A connected session alone does not confirm that the requested stream is usable. |
| The client receives data, but the receiver does not show correction input | Check the forwarding path. For serial forwarding, verify the selected COM port and matching serial parameters; for other connection methods, check that method’s configuration. |
| The receiver shows correction input, but no fixed solution | Check any service-specific requirements such as VRS GGA reporting, then use the receiver’s own documentation to diagnose solution status and configuration. Confirm antenna stability and sky view. |
This is a way to separate the caster link, correction delivery, and receiver solution—not a complete list of possible causes. Receiver model, firmware, correction format, service, and operating conditions can all affect the device-specific diagnosis.

Record what you see before changing settings
- Receiver model and firmware, plus the software showing “connected.”
- Caster response or error, exact mountpoint, and whether the client reports receiving data.
- Whether the receiver itself reports correction input and its current solution label.
- If serial forwarding is used, the COM port and serial parameters.
- Whether the stream is VRS and, if so, whether valid GGA position information is being sent.
- Antenna location, stability, and obstructions.
Change one setting at a time and note what changes in each status. This makes it easier to tell whether an adjustment affected the caster session, delivery to the receiver, or the receiver’s solution.
