Use CompactGUI if you want a graphical, game-folder workflow and can verify that the specific game works well with transparent compression. Use Windows’ built-in NTFS compression if you prefer its Properties interface or command line and do not need CompactGUI’s folder-focused controls. Neither option guarantees a particular space saving or faster loading; test one game on your PC first. Avoid CompactGUI for Windows 11 games that use DirectStorage, following the project’s warning.
What is the difference between NTFS compression and CompactGUI?
NTFS compression is a Windows file-system feature. Microsoft describes compact.exe as “the command-line version of the NTFS file system compression feature.” Windows also offers a graphical way to set compression through a folder’s Properties.
CompactGUI is a graphical tool for applying Windows compression functionality to folders and files. Its README says it uses the Win32 API and algorithms exposed by the Windows Overlay Filter driver. It does not bundle the game into a separate archive: Windows transparently decompresses data when it is accessed.
One distinction matters when comparing modes: ordinary NTFS compression and the executable-oriented /EXE algorithms are separate options in Microsoft’s command documentation. CompactGUI’s algorithm selector uses the latter path; do not assume its modes are identical to checking the compression box in folder Properties.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which option fits your workflow?
| Option | Best fit | How it works | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows folder Properties | You want a built-in graphical setting. | Sets the NTFS compression state for a folder or files. | Changing a directory’s state does not necessarily process files already inside it. |
compact.exe |
You want Windows’ command-line interface or need to process a directory tree. | Microsoft documents /C to compress, /U to uncompress, and /S to apply an operation through a directory tree. |
It applies to NTFS volumes, not FAT or FAT32; existing files may need to be explicitly processed. |
| CompactGUI | You want a graphical, folder-oriented workflow and an algorithm selector. | Invokes Windows functionality and exposes executable-oriented compression modes. | Check game compatibility and performance, especially for DirectStorage titles on Windows 11. |
For the command-line details and directory behavior, see Microsoft’s compact command reference. If you only need to compress or uncompress a game folder with built-in Windows tools, CompactGUI is optional rather than a separate compression format.
How do CompactGUI’s compression modes compare?
Microsoft lists four /EXE modes. Its documentation describes XPRESS4K as the fastest and default mode for that command path, and LZX as the most compact. CompactGUI’s README says the application defaults to XPRESS8K, describing it as a balance between speed and compression; it characterizes XPRESS16K as slower but stronger and LZX as the slowest but strongest.

| Mode | What the cited documentation says |
|---|---|
| XPRESS4K | Microsoft: fastest and default /EXE algorithm. |
| XPRESS8K | CompactGUI: its default, balancing speed and compression. |
| XPRESS16K | CompactGUI: slower but stronger compression. |
| LZX | Microsoft: most compact; CompactGUI: slowest but strongest compression. |
These descriptions indicate trade-offs, not a universal ranking for game performance. A more compact mode can require more compression work, and the outcome depends on the files and hardware. Start with the default rather than assuming the most compact mode is best for a frequently played game.
Will compression save space or change game performance?
It depends on the game’s files, storage device, CPU, and selected mode. CompactGUI’s README includes examples and claims folders can shrink by up to 60%, but it does not state a measurement protocol that would make that figure a reliable forecast for an individual game. Its report of more than 100,000 community submissions for its estimation feature is a project-reported submission count, not a count of independently verified game tests.

The available sources do not establish a controlled, current head-to-head benchmark of ordinary NTFS compression versus CompactGUI across games and hardware. Compression may reduce the space occupied on disk, while transparent decompression adds work when files are read; whether that matters to loading or gameplay is system- and game-dependent. Measure the game folder’s size on disk before and after, then check launch, loading, and play on the same PC.
When should you avoid CompactGUI?
Windows 11 games using DirectStorage
CompactGUI’s README warns against using it with games that use DirectStorage on Windows 11. The project says decompression before assets reach the GPU can negate the intended benefit. The warning is general: the cited sources do not provide an authoritative, current game-by-game compatibility list, so confirm DirectStorage use with the game’s current documentation rather than guessing from the title alone.

Games with known compatibility concerns
The project’s Important Information wiki, edited February 19, 2018, reports that some games may react badly and gives Guild Wars 2 as an example of a game reported to hang while decompressing at launch. This is dated, project-reported guidance—not proof that every installation has the same issue. Test the particular game and current Windows/app versions before processing a large library.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens after game updates or moving files?
Compression needs maintenance as a game changes. CompactGUI’s 2018 wiki says updates that add or replace files can reduce the amount of the installation that remains compressed, and describes limitations around automatically compressing subsequent files. Microsoft also notes that setting a directory’s compression behavior affects new files but does not necessarily change files already present. After an update, inspect the folder’s size on disk and compression state rather than assuming every new file was processed.

The same wiki warns that copying or moving files can remove their compressed state, and says compressed files on an external drive may only be readable on a Windows 10 PC until uncompressed. Because that guidance dates to 2018, verify current behavior before relocating a game or using the drive outside Windows. For a command-line operation, Microsoft documents /C and /U for compressing and uncompressing and /S for traversing a directory tree.
How to decide safely for one game
- Check the game first. Look for current documentation about DirectStorage and known compression compatibility issues. Do not apply CompactGUI to a Windows 11 DirectStorage game in light of the project’s warning.
- Record the baseline. Note the game folder’s size on disk and how long launch and loading take under your normal conditions.
- Choose the simplest workflow. Use folder Properties or
compact.exefor built-in NTFS compression; choose CompactGUI if you want its graphical folder workflow and algorithm selection. - Test, then compare. Compress one installation, check its size on disk, and try launching, loading, and playing. If behavior worsens or the game fails, uncompress it and retest.
- Recheck after changes. Following a game update or move, verify which files remain compressed and whether the game still behaves normally.
Verdict: which should you use?
Choose CompactGUI for convenient graphical, per-folder control when the game is compatible and a small real-world test shows acceptable results. Choose Windows’ built-in NTFS workflow when you want the native option and do not need CompactGUI’s interface or modes. If a game uses DirectStorage on Windows 11, or you cannot tolerate compatibility risk, leave it uncompressed unless current game-specific guidance supports your setup.
