The Nothing Phone (4b) is rated by Nothing for up to 2,000 nits peak brightness, but independent review tests measured roughly 1,119 to 1,160 nits under their respective test conditions. That makes the screen usable outdoors, though its glossy surface and reflections can still make reading in strong sun uncomfortable.
What brightness does Nothing claim?
Nothing’s US product page describes a 6.77-inch Super AMOLED display with a 120 Hz adaptive refresh rate, but the page does not state a brightness figure: Nothing Phone (4b) product page.
A Nothing Community launch post gives the numerical claims: 1,200 nits for outdoor brightness and up to 2,000 nits peak brightness, alongside HDR10+ support: Nothing Community launch post. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of sustained full-screen brightness.
How bright was it in independent tests?
Two reviews report results in a similar general range, but they used separate test setups. Their figures should not be treated as directly interchangeable or averaged into one universal brightness rating.

| Publisher | Reported result | Test context |
|---|---|---|
| PhoneArena | 1,119 nits peak brightness | In-house display test; the review says the screen remains legible in bright surroundings, with outdoor visibility less impressive than the headline suggests. PhoneArena review |
| Notebookcheck | 1,148 cd/m² maximum; 1,160 cd/m² APL18 peak brightness | Review test; Notebookcheck says its sample did not reach the advertised 2,000 cd/m² and notes that reading outdoors in sunshine can sometimes be difficult. Notebookcheck review |
Nits and cd/m² are equivalent units of luminance, but the test conditions still matter. Notebookcheck’s APL18 result refers to its area-based test context; it is not the same label as a simple maximum reading. The reviews do not establish a shared protocol, so these numbers are best read as separate results rather than a head-to-head lab comparison.
Is the Phone (4b) bright enough outdoors?
For many bright environments, the reported test results suggest the display should remain usable. They do not mean it will be comfortable to read in every outdoor condition: strong direct sun and reflections can reduce legibility even when a screen has substantial measured brightness.

T3 describes the display as glossy and says reflections can be taxing outdoors. Its reviewer considered the brightness adequate for the phone’s price but below stronger flagship screens; that is a qualitative impression, not an instrument measurement: T3 hands-on review.

Why doesn’t it simply reach 2,000 nits?
The 2,000-nit figure is Nothing’s peak-brightness claim. A manufacturer peak rating and a reviewer’s measured maximum are different kinds of evidence: the measured value depends on the review’s test method and conditions, while peak brightness does not by itself tell you how bright the entire screen stays during ordinary use. Notebookcheck’s sample measured below the advertised peak, while PhoneArena’s independent result was also lower.

When comparing phones, check whether a number is a manufacturer claim, an independent maximum, or an area-based result such as APL18. Also consider outdoor reflections: a bright panel can still be harder to read in direct sun if its surface reflects the surroundings.
