Nostalgex turns a Jellyfin library into automatically scheduled channels with a TV-style guide, so you can browse and channel-surf instead of picking a title from a list. Despite the “plugin” framing, Nostalgex is a client app and browser tuner—not software installed on the Jellyfin server—and it plays media from your existing library rather than supplying a streaming catalog.

What Nostalgex does with Jellyfin

Nostalgex connects to a media server and builds scheduled channels from the movies and shows already in its library. Its site lists Jellyfin, Plex, and Emby as supported servers. The idea is to make a personal collection feel more like programmed television: open a guide, choose a channel, and watch what is scheduled rather than deciding on a specific title first.

The Nostalgex site describes the product with the tagline “Your library. Now it’s cable.” That is a description of the product’s goal, not a claim that it adds live broadcast or cable programming.

How to use it with a Jellyfin server

Apple TV app

  1. Connect the Apple TV to the same local network as the Jellyfin server.
  2. Open the Nostalgex app and enter the server’s IP address and port when prompted.
  3. Sign in with the Jellyfin account whose library you want Nostalgex to use.
  4. Browse the generated channels and guide. In the reviewed account, four channels appeared initially; additional channel packages were available in settings.

The official App Store listing describes Nostalgex as free and Apple TV-only, and says it requires a Plex or Jellyfin server on the local network. The available sources do not establish supported Apple TV models or tvOS versions, so check the current listing and release notes before relying on a particular device.

Browser tuner

Nostalgex also offers a free web tuner through its official site. It is an alternative if you do not want to use the native Apple TV app. For remote viewing, the article’s author points to the web tuner when the Jellyfin server is already reachable remotely; the server still needs to be set up for remote access. The web and Apple TV versions may show different schedules, so do not assume their guides will match exactly.

Why the channels depend on your library

Nostalgex uses library information—including genre, studio, release year, rating, and watch history—to organize programming. You can enable channel packages, and signing in as a different Jellyfin user can change which content is presented. That makes the experience dependent on the metadata and media Jellyfin can actually see.

If titles are missing or appearing in the wrong places, check the Jellyfin library before troubleshooting the channel guide. The author of the reviewed article needed to rearrange some files and rescan the collection before items appeared correctly. A tidy folder structure and a completed library scan are practical prerequisites for useful automatically generated channels.

Nostalgex, Tunarr, and ErsatzTV: automatic or hands-on?

Option Channel setup Access route described Best fit
Nostalgex Automatically builds channels and schedules from the media library; channel packages can be enabled. Apple TV app or browser tuner. Viewers who want a guide and themed channel surfing with little manual programming.
Tunarr More control and customization than Nostalgex, according to the reviewed article. Not stated in the cited sources. Viewers who want greater control over channel programming.
ErsatzTV More control and customization than Nostalgex, according to the reviewed article. Not stated in the cited sources. Viewers who want greater control over channel programming.

The trade-off is straightforward: Nostalgex reduces setup effort by generating schedules automatically, while Tunarr and ErsatzTV are the alternatives to consider if you want to specify programming more closely. The available sources do not establish a feature-by-feature comparison of their access methods.

Playback and privacy: what is established

In the reviewed article, the author reports that Nostalgex played some 1080p and 4K HDR Blu-ray-ripped MKV files. Some titles took time to load and displayed a static screen while loading. Those are observations from one article, not controlled compatibility tests or a guarantee that every codec, file, server, or Apple TV will behave the same way.

Nostalgex’s September 2026 release notes identify version 1.0.14 and describe a premieres channel plus seven additional channels. Earlier September notes mention a fix for HEVC playback on Apple TV HD and uninterrupted playback for multipart Jellyfin and Emby movies. Playback support and features have been changing, so consult the official Nostalgex site for current release information rather than assuming a particular format will work.

Nostalgex says the app connects directly from the device to the media server and that credentials and library data do not pass through Nostalgex servers. This is the vendor’s privacy statement, not an independently audited finding. The Jellyfin client directory also helps distinguish client applications from Jellyfin server software: Nostalgex is an interface for accessing a server, not a server plugin.

Who should try it?

  • Try Nostalgex if you already have a Jellyfin library and would rather browse a scheduled guide than choose every movie or episode yourself.
  • Use the Apple TV app for the native living-room route, or try the free browser tuner if you prefer a web interface.
  • Look at Tunarr or ErsatzTV if precise, hands-on control over channel programming matters more than automatic setup.
  • Before troubleshooting Nostalgex, confirm the Jellyfin user can see the media, the library scan is current, and the server is reachable from the device you are using.
