NorthStar Earth & Space shares fell as much as 45% during their first day of trading on the New York Stock Exchange, Bloomberg reported on October 2, 2026. That figure describes the steepest reported intraday decline, not a verified loss at the close. The available reporting documents the drop and the company’s merger terms, but does not establish why investors sold.

What happened to NorthStar stock?

Montreal-based NorthStar Earth & Space began trading under the ticker NSTR after completing a merger with blank-check company Viking Acquisition Corp. I. Bloomberg, in a report syndicated by Yahoo Finance UK, said the shares fell as much as 45% on the first trading day.

At 1:46 p.m. New York time, Bloomberg reported a share price of $4.35 and a market capitalization of $39.8 million. Those are intraday snapshots, not closing figures. The report does not establish NorthStar’s final first-day price or close-to-close return. Bloomberg report syndicated by Yahoo Finance UK, October 2, 2026.

What was the deal structure?

Bloomberg reported that the merger valued NorthStar at a $300 million pre-money equity valuation and included a $30 million private investment in public equity (PIPE), backed by Cartesian Capital Group and other institutional investors. A pre-money valuation is a deal measure from before new investment; it should not be confused with the company’s market capitalization after trading began.

NorthStar CEO Stewart Bain told Bloomberg that most public shares in Viking had been redeemed before the merger, leaving a small amount in the trust account. The report did not provide a redemption count or the post-merger cash balance, so the size of the remaining trust funds cannot be determined from it.

What does NorthStar do?

NorthStar provides space-surveillance capabilities. Bloomberg described a system that combines satellite sensors, imagery processing, data and artificial intelligence to identify and anticipate the positions of objects in space, with the goal of helping address collision threats. The report named the Royal Canadian Air Force and North American and European military entities as customers, indicating institutional and government demand rather than a consumer service.

Is there a confirmed reason the shares fell?

No definitive cause is established in the available report. The merger, the reported redemptions and the company’s stated plans and financial expectations provide transaction context, but they do not prove why investors sold. The report does not demonstrate that redemptions, valuation, liquidity, operating performance or any other single factor caused the decline.

Bain told Bloomberg, “You don’t pick your timing. You figure out how to ride the timing.” That comment does not identify a cause for the stock’s movement; the reported evidence supports describing the debut’s price action, not assigning a motive to the market.
