The historical distinction is specific to the opponent and venue: NPC50 says Northland had not previously beaten Auckland at home in Whangārei in the NPC era dating from 1976. The finish made the occasion especially close, with Reihana’s long-range penalty arriving in the final minutes to settle a one-point game.
