Nolla Health’s Nolla Derm app is piloting AI-assisted acne prescriptions for eligible adults in Utah. The pilot is limited to mild-to-moderate acne and topical treatments, with physician oversight that becomes less direct as the program advances. It is not a general-purpose AI prescriber or nationwide authorization.
How does Nolla Derm’s AI acne prescription app work?
According to Nolla Health’s October 5, 2026 announcement, an eligible user gives informed consent, completes a 10- to 15-minute intake questionnaire, and submits a facial scan. The system selects from physician-approved treatment pathways rather than generating an unrestricted treatment plan. Nolla says the service is for Utah residents aged 18 or older. Utah’s record lists additional exclusions, including people with severe acne, those who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, people with a weakened immune system, and people who have previously reacted to listed medications. These limits mean the app is not intended to manage every type of acne or every patient’s circumstances. A person outside the stated eligibility criteria should seek care through an appropriate clinician rather than assume the app can accommodate their case.

Utah’s record says advancement to each later stage requires written state approval. It also lists operating commitments that include identity and age checks, routing prescriptions only within Utah, telling pharmacists that a prescription was AI-generated, and reporting adverse events to the state within 24 hours. The shift from approval of every prescription to pre-review issuance and then sampled retrospective review is material: oversight remains part of the pilot, but it becomes less direct as the program progresses.

Does this mean Utah approved AI to prescribe medication?
No. Utah’s Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy lists Nolla Health—operated by Magic Health, Inc. and Magic Health Services, LLC—as an authorized participant for a defined pilot running from October 5, 2026, to October 5, 2027. The record describes limited regulatory mitigation in conjunction with the Division of Professional Licensing for this named participant and task.
