For a US shopper looking for a new, low-cost Android phone, Motorola is the easier budget pick to evaluate right now. Its US store lists the Moto G 2026, and the phone was reported to launch at $200. HMD still lists Nokia-branded phones, but its catalog does not establish a similarly current Nokia budget release or a comparable local price. The right choice still depends on what is actually available, compatible, and competitively priced where you live.
Why the brand names can be confusing
HMD Global licenses the Nokia phone brand. HMD’s current international smartphone catalog is primarily branded HMD, while its separate Nokia catalog lists Nokia-branded models such as the XR21, XR21 Limited Edition, G42 5G, C22, C32, G22, and X30 5G, along with older G- and C-series phones. A catalog listing does not confirm a recent release, local stock, or a current price. HMD also says its listed international devices are unavailable in Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Belgium. HMD smartphone catalog | HMD Nokia phone catalog
Motorola’s US phone store organizes its range into Razr, Edge, and Moto G families. For a budget comparison, the Moto G 2026 is the clearest current example in the available US product listings. Motorola US phone store

Motorola’s product page lists the Moto G 2026 as an Android 16, 5G phone with 4GB of memory, up to 128GB of internal storage, microSD expansion up to 1TB, and a 5,200mAh battery. It also advertises a 6.7-inch 120Hz display, water-repellent design, Gorilla Glass 3, and 30W TurboPower charging. These are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent test results. Android Central reported a US launch price of $200 for the Moto G 2026, with North American sales beginning December 11, 2025. That is a launch price, not a quote for today’s price or a guarantee of current stock. The same report says the Moto G Play 2026 launched at $170. Compared with the Moto G 2026, the Play has 64GB rather than 128GB of onboard storage, a 32MP rear camera rather than a 50MP main camera, and 18W rather than 30W charging; both are listed with 4GB RAM and a 5,200mAh battery. These specifications alone do not establish which phone takes better photos or performs better in everyday use. Android Central’s Moto G 2026 and Moto G Play 2026 report
How Nokia compares on price and repair
HMD’s Nokia catalog includes models such as the G42 5G and XR21, but the cited catalog does not provide a comparable current price. Check whether the exact Nokia model is for sale locally and compare its configuration and price with the Motorola before treating them as budget alternatives.

Repairability may matter more if you already own a Nokia G22 or G42 5G. HMD says those models are designed for home repair using official parts and guides, and identifies iFixit and GSMnet as partner sources in specified markets. HMD says parts and tool prices vary by provider and model, so there is no established repair-savings figure or general repair-cost advantage here. Confirm market coverage and exact model compatibility on HMD’s repair information page.

- Check today’s local price. Compare the same storage tier and sales conditions, including whether the phone is unlocked or tied to a carrier. Treat the reported $200 Moto G 2026 figure as its US launch price, not today’s price; availability varies by country.
- Verify the model’s status. A manufacturer catalog entry does not prove that a Nokia model is a recent release, locally stocked, or currently sold at a particular price.
- Confirm carrier compatibility. Check the exact model and variant with your carrier, including its supported network bands. Motorola’s US store provides a carrier-compatibility area, but that does not establish compatibility with every operator or variant.
- Match the hardware to your needs. Compare storage, expandable storage, camera configuration, charging, display, and battery specifications. A megapixel count or refresh rate by itself is not a full measure of image quality or overall experience.
- Check software and security support for the exact SKU. Motorola’s product-specific support page lists the Moto G 2026 as launched in March 2026 with Android 16 and gives a June 2030 security-update stop date. Android Central separately reported a promise of two Android OS upgrades and three years of security updates for the Moto G 2026 and Moto G Play 2026. Because the launch timing and support statements differ, use Motorola’s live product-specific listing as the operational reference and confirm the exact regional or carrier model. Motorola says its security-update information is informational and plans may change. Motorola security update information | Android Central’s launch and support report
- Include repair in the ownership decision. If you own a Nokia G22 or G42 5G, check HMD’s parts, guides, partner, and market information before replacing it. Comparable Motorola repair costs have not been established here.
Which brand should you choose?
Choose Motorola as your starting point for a new US budget phone
If you are shopping in the US, the Moto G 2026 gives you a clearly listed current model with published specifications and a reported $200 launch price. Check its current street price and carrier compatibility before buying; the launch price does not establish what it costs now.

Consider Nokia when an exact model is available at a good local price
A Nokia-branded phone may suit you if a specific model is in stock, compatible with your carrier, and priced well against the Motorola. Do not assume an HMD-branded phone is a Nokia, or that an older Nokia catalog entry is a current sale item.
Consider repair if you already own a supported Nokia
For existing Nokia G22 and G42 5G owners, HMD’s documented self-repair options may be worth checking before buying a replacement. The actual parts and tools, their prices, and market availability depend on the device and country.
