Nokia and Google Fiber tested 50G PON over Google Fiber’s existing live network in Kansas City, but the July 2024 announcement described a network trial—not a retail 50 Gig internet plan. The test matters because it demonstrated a possible path for adding higher-capacity PON technology alongside existing generations on the same fiber.
What happened in the 50G PON trial?
On July 8, 2024, Nokia announced that GFiber Labs had tested 50 Gb/s broadband speeds over Google Fiber’s live fiber network. Google Fiber said the test took place in one of its Kansas City fiber huts. Nokia characterized it as the first live-network demonstration of 50G PON in the United States and its second such trial globally in the preceding four months; those “first” and trial-count claims are Nokia’s own descriptions. Nokia’s announcement and Google Fiber’s account describe a technology demonstration, not a customer speed-test result.
The trial used Nokia’s Lightspan MF fiber access platform and followed a Nokia-GFiber 25G PON deployment announced the year before. Google Fiber’s Liz Hsu, Senior Director, Product & Billing, said the test built on that earlier deployment and could pave the way for future network improvements. The announcement did not specify a household endpoint, independent throughput methodology, rollout area, launch date, or price.

PON, or passive optical network, is a fiber-access architecture used to deliver connectivity from a provider’s network to customers. The “50G” label refers to a nominal technology capacity class, not a promise that an individual subscriber will receive 50 Gb/s. Nokia’s current product page lists 50 Gb/s downstream and either 25 or 50 Gb/s upstream capability for its 50G PON solution, which includes Lightspan OLT and 50G PON ONT elements. These are Nokia product specifications, not speeds measured at a Google Fiber customer’s home. Nokia’s 50G PON product page
#1 Best Overall
- Detects optical power in single-mode and multimode fiber wavelengths (near infrared range 850 to 1625 nm)
- No setup or interpretation needed – light and sound indicate presence of optical signal
- “Non-contact” detector lessens the risk of damage to fiber optics; suitable for ports and patch cords, SM, MM, UPC and APC connections
- LightBeat flashes to indicate operation and battery status; powers off after five minutes to preserve battery (2xAAA, included)
- Two-year warranty
Can 50G PON run on existing fiber?
The announced upgrade path rests on coexistence: Nokia said different PON technologies could be combined on the same fiber, and Google Fiber said 50G PON can coexist with XGS-PON and 25G PON. That can make a staged network transition possible without replacing every fiber link simply to introduce a newer PON generation. It does not mean every network can upgrade without changes, or that subscribers automatically get the newer capacity. Operators still need compatible access equipment, deployment decisions, and an implementation suited to their network.
That distinction is important for interpreting the trial. It showed that Nokia and Google Fiber could demonstrate 50G PON on a live network alongside the existing upgrade context; it did not establish that the provider had deployed 50G PON broadly or changed service tiers.

- Exceptional Signal Purity of OS1: The LC to ST Singlemode Fiber Patch Cable with OS1 fiber offers exceptional signal clarity by minimizing dispersion, ensuring stable and reliable performance over long distances. It maintains signal integrity across hundreds of kilometers, making it perfect for critical long-distance communications.
- LC to ST Connector Compatibility: The LC to ST fiber patch cable seamlessly integrates LC connectors, commonly used in modern networking equipment, with the more traditional ST connectors, often found in legacy systems, ensuring compatibility and smooth operation across various devices.
- Low Loss & High Bandwidth: Single-mode OS1 fiber patch cable exhibits exceptionally low signal attenuation (typically ranging from about 0.35dB/km to 0.4dB/km) at wavelengths of 1310nm and 1550nm, assuring efficient data transmission even over tens or hundreds of kilometers. This feature, coupled with its substantial bandwidth potential, guarantees superior performance in extending networks across vast distances.
- LSZH Material: The LC to ST Singlemode Fiber Optic Patch Cable uses a Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) jacket material. This material is designed to minimize the release of harmful halogen gases and is resistant to fading, breaking, and deformation. The fiber core, made of silica glass, is known for its low signal attenuation and high-bandwidth transmission capabilities.
- Mechanical Properties: LC to ST Single mode Duplex OS1 fiber patch cords operate at -20ºC to +70ºC and have a minimum installation bending radius of 5.0 cm and a minimum long term bending radius of 3 cm. This OS1 LC to ST Fiber Patch Cable Single mode is specially designed for fast Ethernet, Fiber Channel, Gigabit Ethernet Speeds, data center, premises, educational, LAN, SAN, commercial applications.
Does Google Fiber offer 50 Gig internet yet?
The July 2024 material does not announce a commercial 50 Gig plan. Google Fiber discussed a 20 Gig early-access plan and work deploying Nokia 25G PON while describing 50G PON as a test and future possibility. Those separate statements should not be read as evidence that 50 Gig service was available to customers.

The sources establishing the trial do not say whether Google Fiber later announced a commercial 50G PON rollout. They also provide no pricing or customer availability details for such a service. Nokia’s stated 50 Gb/s downstream and 25 or 50 Gb/s upstream capabilities describe its technology, not a Google Fiber subscription.

How the trial fits Nokia’s PON roadmap
In its July 2024 announcement, Nokia distinguished 10G and 25G offerings from 50G trials and 100G development. Nokia executive Geert Heyninck described the goal as a range of PON technologies that providers could mix and match on the same platform and fiber, selecting according to their needs and business case. These were Nokia’s readiness descriptions at the time of the announcement, not a guarantee that every technology has the same commercial status today.
Nokia also reported that more than 12 operators worldwide were benefiting from 25G PON, that more than five ONT vendors were bringing 25G solutions to market, and that more than 60 operators and suppliers belonged to an MSA focused on 25G PON. These are vendor-reported ecosystem figures, not independently audited market totals. They help explain the industry context for a 50G trial, but do not establish Google Fiber customer availability.
