You can regenerate an old invoice PDF with identical bytes in Node.js, but only if you control every input that affects the file’s output. That means restoring the original invoice data, template, generator version, dependencies, fonts, settings and creation timestamp, running the same generation path, and then comparing the new file to the archived original by hash or byte comparison.
Treat this as a reproducibility technique. A matching hash shows the file is the same file. It does not, on its own, show that the invoice meets legal, tax or archival requirements.
What byte-identical replay means
A replayed PDF is byte-identical when its hash, or a byte-by-byte comparison, matches the archived original. That is a stricter test than visual similarity. Two PDFs can look the same on screen and still differ in metadata, object ordering, compression or embedded timestamps.

Byte identity matters when you need to show that a stored invoice has not changed, or when you need to recreate a document after the original generator has been upgraded or the source system has moved on. Byte identity is not required for every business case. If the requirement is only that a customer sees the same amounts and line items, a visual or text comparison may be the correct test (see the verification section below).

The inputs that decide the bytes
Replay succeeds or fails on the inputs below. Any one of them, if left to chance, can change the output even when the invoice content is identical.
Creation timestamp
If the generator reads the current clock, the replayed file will carry a different date. The pdfnative reproducible-output guide notes that dates feed PDF metadata and the trailer ID, so a new timestamp changes the bytes. Preserve the original creation instant and pin it explicitly during regeneration.
Generator version and dependencies
Identical invoice data is not sufficient. The generator version, template, configuration and font files all affect output. The pdfnative guide documents that engine changes can alter bytes, so a library upgrade should be treated as a new rendering environment rather than a silent improvement. For historical replay, pin the exact library version and keep the dependency lockfile that was used when the original invoice was created.

Invoice data and template
The archived source data and the exact template version are the first replay inputs. If a customer name, tax rate or product description is missing from the archive and must be rebuilt from a current database, the replayed file will not be the original evidence. Record every such substitution, and do not treat a rebuilt file as byte-identical to the original.

Fonts and image assets
Font files and logos are part of the output. PDFKit’s Node documentation shows that font resources, and the PDF/A color profile where used, must be available beside a bundled application or registered explicitly. If the original deployment loaded a font from a path that no longer exists, replay will fail or fall back to a different font. Keep the font files and their versions with the archive.
Encryption randomness
If the PDF is encrypted, randomized keys, salts or initialization vectors can make byte equality impossible for that implementation. The pdfnative guide documents this limit. If your invoices are encrypted, confirm whether your library’s randomness can be controlled before promising byte-identical replay, and otherwise compare the decrypted content or the unencrypted structure.

Retrieve the archived inputs. Collect the original invoice data, the exact template or template version, the configuration used, the logo and image assets, and the font files. Record where each came from.

Set the historical creation date explicitly. In pdfnative, the per-call creation date takes precedence over the process-wide default, so set the per-call value to the original instant. Do not let the current wall clock enter the metadata or any visible date placeholder.

Generate into a fresh output path. Write the file to a new location so the archived original is never overwritten. Calculate a hash of the output, for example with
sha256sum replayed.pdf original.pdf, and compare the two values. -
Log the result. Store the replay inputs, the library version, the output hash and the comparison result alongside the original invoice record.

Choosing a library for replay
Several Node.js libraries can generate PDFs, but the evidence reviewed here does not support naming one as the best choice for replay. Compare candidates on five axes: explicit timestamp and metadata control; availability of historical versions and stable dependencies; font embedding and asset deployment; whether encryption is used and whether its randomness can be controlled; and support for byte, visual and text comparison. The table below records what each vendor’s documentation states on those axes. These are documented capabilities, not independent performance tests.

Where a cell reads “not stated,” the library may still offer the control. Check the library’s current documentation and test it against your own archived output before relying on it.

Use the check that matches the requirement. Byte comparison answers whether the file is identical. Visual comparison answers whether the page looks the same when rendered. Text extraction answers whether the same words and amounts can be recovered. Structural or metadata checks answer whether the document object model and dates are consistent. A file can pass one check and fail another, so state which check you ran.
When the hashes differ
A differing hash proves only that the bytes differ. It does not identify the cause. Investigate in this order:

Creation date or other metadata that still reflects the current clock.

Differences in compression or object ordering introduced by the generator.

Changed source data or a substituted value in the invoice content.
Do not overwrite or correct the archived original while investigating. Fix the replay environment, rerun the generation, and compare again.
Limits: legal, tax and archival requirements
This technique does not establish whether a replayed invoice is legally admissible, how long invoice records must be kept, or whether an invoice must meet PDF/A or any other archival format. Those answers depend on jurisdiction and on your business’s governing record-retention policy, and the sources reviewed for this article do not address them for any country. Check those requirements separately. Describe byte-identical replay as an integrity and reproducibility control, not as a compliance guarantee.
