How many Nobel Prize categories are there?
The modern announcement cycle covers six categories: Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, Peace and Economic Sciences. Economic Sciences is not one of Alfred Nobel’s original five fields: Sveriges Riksbank established that prize in 1969 in memory of Nobel. The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901.
For historical context—not 2026 results—the official overview records 633 awards to 1,026 people and organisations across the six categories from 1901 through 2025.

Alfred Nobel’s will set out the purpose of awarding prizes to “those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.” Nobel Prize Outreach reproduces that wording on its About the Nobel Prize page.
Until each 2026 decision is announced, there are no confirmed laureates, prize motivations or winning achievements to compare. After an announcement, the official prize citation and details identify the contribution recognized, category and awarding institution.
