No—not as a playable file on a computer or external drive using a method described in DIRECTV’s cited support guidance. DIRECTV explains how to find and watch recordings through a DVR, its website, and its app; it does not provide a file-export procedure. DIRECTV Community Support says recordings are encrypted to the DVR that made them, so they cannot be transferred to an external drive.
If you mean watching a recording on a phone or tablet, the DIRECTV app may provide streaming access on compatible devices. If you need a physical copy, a community support response describes recording the receiver’s playback with a DVD or VCR recorder in real time. Neither option is the same as downloading the original DVR file.
What “download” means for a DIRECTV DVR recording
There are three different outcomes people may mean by “download”: exporting a file, watching a recording on another device, or creating a physical copy. The available guidance supports the latter two only in limited ways.
- Export a file: DIRECTV’s cited instructions do not describe a supported way to copy DVR recordings to a computer or USB drive. A DIRECTV Community Support representative said in 2024 that recordings are encrypted to the receiver and cannot be downloaded to an external drive. That forum answer is a support response, not a complete technical specification.
- Watch elsewhere: DIRECTV says the DVR playlist can be accessed online and in the app. The app can stream live or recorded TV on compatible devices, subject to device, network, account, and content availability. Streaming is not a saved, portable file.
- Make a physical copy: A 2021 DIRECTV Community Support response describes playing the recording through the receiver and recording that output with a DVD or VCR recorder. This captures playback as it happens; it does not copy or unlock the original DVR recording.
How to find and stream a recording
On the receiver
To open the DVR playlist, press List on the remote or use Menu > My Library. DIRECTV’s recording support page also explains scheduling programs from the receiver’s Guide or Search. These are ways to access recordings on the service and receiver, not export them as files.

On the DIRECTV app or website
DIRECTV’s recording support page says the playlist can also be accessed at directv.com and in the app. The current app support page describes watching live or recorded TV on compatible devices with an internet connection. Check that page for current device and operating-system requirements, since supported devices and features can change: DIRECTV streaming-device compatibility.
An older DIRECTV onboarding guide gives the path My Library > DVR Recordings while the mobile device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the receiver. It also says that, where available, the app may stream the Video On Demand version of a recording. DIRECTV’s app support page notes that streaming on certain third-party devices may be limited to home Wi-Fi. It describes mobile streaming availability within the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Check the current support page for the applicable device and location details.

Can you copy a recording to a USB drive or computer?
The cited DIRECTV materials do not give a supported procedure for exporting a DVR recording as a computer file or copying it to USB. In a 2024 community response, DIRECTV Community Support said the recordings are encrypted to the receiver that recorded them and cannot be downloaded to an external drive. The response also refers to copyright protection; it is not a detailed technical specification or legal analysis.

A USB drive, capture device, or computer should not be assumed to extract the DVR’s native recording. The available guidance does not establish a supported method for doing so, and it does not recommend bypassing encryption or content protection.

DIRECTV Community Support described a workaround in a 2021 answer about accessing recordings online: connect a DVD or VCR recorder to the receiver, play the DVR recording, and record the output. The result is a copy of the program’s playback, made in real time—not a direct download or transfer of the DVR file.

- Check the receiver’s available outputs and the recorder’s available inputs. The community response does not establish which current receiver models or connectors support this setup.
- Connect the receiver’s output to a compatible input on the DVD or VCR recorder. Do not assume a particular cable or connector will work without checking both devices.
- Set the recorder to the input receiving the receiver’s signal.
- Start recording on the recorder, then play the desired program from the DVR.
- Stop the recorder when playback ends and check the result.
Because this method records the playback, it takes at least as long as the portion you want to copy and depends on compatible equipment. DIRECTV’s community answer does not verify compatibility for specific models.
