Neither game is better for every group. If you already own a Wii and Wii Remotes, Wii Sports is a straightforward way to play its five original sports with up to four players, according to Nintendo’s listing. If your group has a Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Sports offers a broader current lineup and lets everyone bowl simultaneously. In either case, check the player limit and controller setup for the specific sport you plan to play.

Which should your group choose?

Choose Wii Sports if you already have a Wii

If the Wii and enough compatible Wii Remotes are already available, the original Wii Sports gives a group Tennis, Baseball, Golf, Bowling and Boxing. Nintendo UK lists the game for 1–4 players. That range describes the product overall; confirm the player capacity for the particular sport and mode rather than assuming all four can participate in the same way.

For Boxing, Nintendo specifies a Wii Remote and Nunchuk. If your group only has Wii Remotes, account for that requirement before choosing Boxing.

Choose Nintendo Switch Sports if your group has a Switch

The current Nintendo listing includes eight sports: Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, Chambara, Golf and Basketball. The collection launched with six; Golf was added in a free update on November 29, 2022, and Basketball arrived later. Nintendo’s current product page, rather than the launch roster, is the useful reference for what the game includes now.

Bowling is the clearest local-session advantage: Nintendo says all players can bowl simultaneously. That does not mean every other sport offers simultaneous play or the same number of local players.

Let the sport decide when hardware is available for both

The collections overlap in Tennis, Golf and Bowling, but otherwise offer different sports. Wii Sports has Baseball and Boxing; Nintendo Switch Sports has Soccer, Volleyball, Badminton, Chambara and Basketball. Pick based on what the group actually wants to play, then verify its local mode and controller needs. The Switch collection’s larger current roster does not by itself make it a better fit for a group seeking one particular sport.

  • Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online

How many people can play on one console?

Nintendo lists both collections as supporting 1–4 players overall. For Nintendo Switch Sports, the listing specifies 1–4 players on one system, while Nintendo Support cautions that the number who can play at once depends on the sport. These are product-level ranges, not a promise that every activity supports four players in every mode. Nintendo’s cited Wii listing also gives an overall 1–4-player range without establishing a universal per-sport configuration.

If you are considering Switch Sports LAN play, that is a separate multi-console setup: Nintendo Support says it supports up to four consoles, with up to two players per console. Do not confuse that arrangement with playing together on one Switch.

What controllers and setup do you need?

Wii Sports

  • A Wii console and Wii Remotes are required; the game is listed for Wii and uses Wii Remote controls.
  • Boxing uses a Nunchuk with the Wii Remote.

Nintendo Switch Sports

  • A Nintendo Switch system and compatible Joy-Con are needed. Nintendo says controller requirements vary by sport; supported arrangements include paired Joy-Con, a single Joy-Con, and Joy-Con with the Leg Strap.
  • The game does not support handheld mode. Nintendo describes supported play modes as TV and tabletop; play experience and compatibility vary on Switch Lite.
  • The Leg Strap is relevant to supported Soccer play, not a universal requirement for the collection.

In practice, count the compatible controllers your players can use for the selected sport before starting. Nintendo’s overall player range does not tell you how many controllers a specific activity requires.

Release dates and roster context

Wii Sports was released on December 8, 2006, according to Nintendo UK. Nintendo Switch Sports launched on April 29, 2022, with Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara, and Nintendo’s launch announcement noted that multiplayer could require additional accessories.

  • 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)
  • Varied game modes - Solo or multiplayer for up to 8 players.
  • More than 15 environments and tons of unlockable items.

Nintendo announced Golf as a free update on November 29, 2022, describing 21 holes from the Wii Sports series and local play. The current Switch Sports product page also lists Basketball, so a launch-era six-sport count is no longer the current roster. These announcements and listings are from Nintendo’s UK or US/Americas pages; product details can vary by region.

Check your setup before buying

  1. Identify the system you can use: Wii for Wii Sports, or Nintendo Switch for Nintendo Switch Sports. The game alone does not provide the console or controllers.
  2. Choose the sport and mode: do not use either game’s overall 1–4 player listing as a sport-by-sport guarantee.
  3. Count compatible controllers: confirm Wii Remotes and, for Boxing, a Nunchuk; for Switch Sports, check Nintendo’s sport-specific Joy-Con requirements.
  4. Decide whether turns matter: Switch Sports Bowling supports everyone bowling simultaneously; do not assume that flow applies to the other sports.
