Which game library is right for you?
Choose Switch 2 for Nintendo games and compatible Switch purchases
Switch 2 runs Switch 2 software and compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, according to Nintendo’s Switch 2 features page. Nintendo cautions that some earlier Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible, so check the Switch 2 game compatibility information for titles you care about before buying.
Choose Steam Deck OLED for a PC library
Steam Deck OLED is a handheld PC for accessing Steam games, but a game being available on Steam does not guarantee that it will run seamlessly on the Deck. Steam provides per-game compatibility ratings and support information. Check a title’s listing and its Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming a whole library is equally playable.

Can Steam Deck play Nintendo Switch games?
The cited Nintendo and Valve sources do not establish Nintendo Switch cartridge compatibility on Steam Deck. Do not buy a Deck on the assumption that it will play Switch games. If your must-play titles are Nintendo releases, Switch 2 is the supported path described by Nintendo.
Performance: what the specifications can—and cannot—tell you
There is no supported blanket verdict that Switch 2 or Steam Deck OLED is faster in every game. The official specifications describe screens, output modes, and other hardware details; they are not head-to-head game benchmarks. Performance can vary by title and its implementation on each platform.

Switch 2’s screen is a 7.9-inch LCD with 1920×1080 resolution, HDR10, and variable refresh rate up to 120Hz in supported contexts. Nintendo lists TV output up to 4K, with a maximum of 60fps at 4K; 4K, HDR, and VRR depend on supported software and a compatible display. Those capabilities do not mean every game uses them.
Steam Deck OLED has a 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR OLED display with a refresh rate up to 90Hz. Its OLED panel is a different display technology from Switch 2’s LCD, while Switch 2 lists more pixels and a higher supported refresh-rate ceiling. Which screen you prefer depends on the games and features you value; neither comparison alone proves better game performance.

Battery expectations
Nintendo estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours of Switch 2 battery life, depending on the game. Valve estimates 3–12 hours for Steam Deck OLED, depending on content. These are each manufacturer’s broad estimates, not results from a directly comparable test; the game and how you use the device affect actual runtime.

Consider the complete setup you plan to carry, including any case, charger, or accessories.

Valve lists Steam Deck OLED configurations with 512GB or 1TB of NVMe storage. Compare the capacity of the specific model you are considering with your library; the listed figures are configuration options, not a promise that every game library will fit.
Price and total cost
Prices are regional and can change. Nintendo announced a U.S. suggested retail price of $449.99 for Switch 2 at its June 5, 2025 launch; that is a historical launch price, not confirmation of today’s price. Valve’s Steam Deck store page listed the OLED models at $549 for 512GB and $649 for 1TB in the material consulted for this comparison; those U.S. prices are subject to change and may differ by region. Check current local prices, availability, and the cost of games and any accessories you need before deciding.
Quick Recap
How to choose
- Start with your must-play games. Nintendo exclusives and compatible Switch purchases point toward Switch 2; an existing PC game library may point toward Steam Deck OLED, after checking individual compatibility.
- Decide how much setup and checking you accept. Nintendo provides a compatibility lookup for earlier Switch games. Steam Deck buyers should check per-game ratings and support details rather than assume every PC release works the same way.
- Match the device to your play setting. Switch 2 has handheld, tabletop, and TV modes. Deck OLED suits PC handheld play, with an external-display setup as an additional consideration.
- Compare the screen features you value. Switch 2 lists a higher resolution and supported refresh-rate ceiling; Deck OLED uses an OLED panel. Supported features depend on the game and, for Switch 2 TV output, the display.
- Plan for real-world battery and storage needs. Manufacturer battery estimates vary widely with content, and the systems use different storage options and expansion rules.
- Check the current complete cost. Verify local device prices and availability, then account for games and any required storage or display accessories.
