If your console will stay by the TV, decide between PlayStation 5 and Xbox by comparing the games you want, your display and performance expectations, whether you use discs, and the cost of the console and services in your country. Xbox Series X and Series S also serve different needs: X targets native 4K and offers models with a disc drive; S is disc-free and designed for 1440p with 4K upscaling.
How to choose between Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox
Start with how and where you play, then compare the games and ownership details that matter to you. No single console is the right choice for every player, and hardware specifications alone do not establish which one delivers the best experience across different games.
- Choose Switch 2 if you want one system for handheld, tabletop, and TV play.
- Compare PS5 and Xbox if you mainly play on a television. Prioritize the games you want, then consider display targets, discs, your existing library, storage, services, and the local price of the exact model or bundle.
- Choose between Xbox Series X and S based on disc use and display expectations: Microsoft positions X for native 4K, while S is a disc-free 1440p console with 4K upscaling.
Switch 2 is the only hybrid option here
Nintendo Switch 2 can be used as a handheld, set on a surface for tabletop play, or connected to a television through its dock. That flexibility—not a claim that it outperforms the home consoles—is its clearest practical distinction. Nintendo announced its release for June 5, 2025. Nintendo’s Switch 2 specifications and announcement describe the display and output modes.
Screen and TV output
The built-in screen is a 7.9-inch LCD with a 1920 × 1080 resolution. Nintendo lists HDR10 and variable refresh rate (VRR) support up to 120 Hz. In handheld and tabletop modes, the maximum resolution is 1080p. When docked, supported output can reach 4K at up to 60 frames per second, or 1080p and 1440p at up to 120 frames per second.

Those are system capabilities, not a promise that every game renders at those resolutions or frame rates. The game and connected display both affect what you can see. Check a title’s own specifications if a particular resolution or frame-rate target matters to you.
Storage and Switch game compatibility
Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal UFS storage. Nintendo says expansion requires a compatible microSD Express card; an ordinary microSD card is not interchangeable for this purpose. Nintendo’s product information identifies the required card type.

PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S: what the specifications tell you
Specifications help describe a console, but they are not a cross-platform test. Game settings, display, and implementation affect actual image quality and performance; do not choose a winner from processor or graphics figures alone.

Games should decide between TV consoles
For a living-room console, make a shortlist of games you actually intend to play and check which systems support them. A console’s technical capacity matters less if its available games do not fit your interests. Catalogs and availability change, so verify the current lineup in your region before purchasing.

Physical discs and existing libraries
If you buy, borrow, or trade physical games, confirm that the specific model you are considering has a disc drive. Xbox Series X has models with a UHD Blu-ray drive; Series S is disc-free. Check the exact PS5 model and bundle as well, rather than assuming every configuration handles discs identically.
For Nintendo Switch owners, verify compatibility title by title before treating an existing collection as guaranteed to work on Switch 2. For any platform, check whether the games you own carry over in the way you expect and whether physical media is useful on the exact console model.

Storage and subscriptions affect ownership cost
Compare usable internal storage and the expansion format before you buy. Switch 2 requires compatible microSD Express cards. Xbox supports a separately sold Series X|S Storage Expansion Card that matches custom SSD performance, as well as USB external HDD storage; confirm which games can be used from a given storage device before relying on it.
Online subscriptions can also change the long-term value of a console, but their price, benefits, and game catalogs vary by market and over time. Compare the current terms in your country against the features you will use, rather than treating a subscription’s headline catalog as a permanent part of the console.
Check your local price, not an old launch figure
Console prices, stock, bundles, and model availability differ by country and retailer. Compare the exact model, included accessories or games, disc drive, storage capacity, and any subscription trial on offer. Nintendo’s launch announcement reflects a specific market and date; it is not a reliable current price comparison with PS5 and Xbox. Check local retailers on the day you buy.
Quick Recap
Which console fits each kind of player?
- You want to play away from the TV: Switch 2 is the choice in this comparison with a built-in screen and handheld, tabletop, and docked modes.
- You want a TV-first system and native 4K is a priority: Xbox Series X is Microsoft’s stated fit; verify the games and display you plan to use.
- You want an Xbox without a disc drive: Series S is the disc-free option, designed for 1440p with 4K upscaling.
- You are deciding between PS5 and Xbox: Start with the games you want and the exact model, then compare disc needs, storage, subscriptions, display expectations, and local total cost. The specifications cited here do not establish a universal performance winner.
- You already own a Nintendo Switch: Check compatibility for your essential games before upgrading, and factor in the cost of compatible microSD Express storage if you need more room.
