For Nintendo Switch 2 game storage, buy a microSD Express card—not a conventional microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card. Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. Choose a capacity that suits your library, then power off the console before installing it.
What kind of microSD card works with Nintendo Switch 2?
Only microSD Express cards are compatible with Switch 2 for expandable game storage. Nintendo says the console supports any card that meets the microSD Express standard, up to 2 TB. An ordinary microSD card—even one that worked in the original Nintendo Switch—is not a substitute. See Nintendo’s compatibility guidance and its microSD Express FAQ.
- Check that the product is explicitly labeled microSD Express and carries the corresponding mark. A microSDXC label by itself does not establish compatibility.
- Choose a capacity no larger than Nintendo’s stated 2 TB maximum.
- Compare price, warranty, and capacity among qualifying cards. Nintendo’s cited guidance does not rank brands or identify a best-value capacity.
- Plan to connect to the internet: Nintendo says a system update is required the first time a microSD Express card is used.
How to install or remove the card
- Turn off the console. Hold the POWER button for at least three seconds, select Power Options, then Power Off.
- Gently open the adjustable stand to expose the microSD Express card slot.
- Position the card with its label facing away from the console.
- Insert it straight into the slot and gently push until it clicks into place.
- To remove it, first power off the console. Press the card in until it clicks, then slide it out.
These are Nintendo’s insertion and removal instructions. Its instructions do not call for a separate formatting step. After inserting a card for the first time, allow for the required internet system update.
What the card stores—and what it does not
A microSD Express card can hold downloadable software, downloadable content, software update data, screenshots, and captured gameplay video. Game saves stay in system memory; Nintendo says they cannot be copied or saved to the card. In other words, adding a card expands space for software and media, not a place to back up save files.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo says an inserted card becomes the default save location for downloadable software. That means software files, not game-save data. To move software files between system memory and the card, go to System Settings > Data Management > Move System / microSD Express Card Data, then select the software data to move. Nintendo notes that save data and some update data cannot be migrated; the tool also does not set a permanent destination for future installs, and updates may later be saved somewhere other than the location you selected. See Nintendo’s data-move instructions.
Can you reuse an old Nintendo Switch microSD card?
An ordinary microSD card used with the original Switch cannot serve as Switch 2 game storage, nor can it be used to save or load game saves on Switch 2. There is a limited media-import exception: Nintendo supports importing screenshots and captured video from the older card. That does not make the card compatible for Switch 2 software storage. Nintendo explains the distinction in its compatibility guidance, microSD Express FAQ, and Switch-to-Switch 2 system-transfer information.

Should you use one card or several?
Nintendo recommends one microSD Express card per console. If you run out of space, Nintendo says you can copy all data to a larger card, but software saved across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto a single card. If you expect your library to grow, weigh the cost of more capacity now against the inconvenience of managing multiple cards; there is no universal best size established by Nintendo’s guidance.
