Nintendo did not formally recall the 3DS games discussed here. The documented controversies involved Tomodachi Life’s relationship options and a scene changed for Western releases of Fire Emblem Fates. Both examples drew public attention, but the available evidence does not establish a definitive ranking of the era’s most controversial games or a comparably supported Wii U case.
Was there a Nintendo recall of controversial 3DS or Wii U games?
No formal recall of the games described below is documented in the cited coverage. Here, “recalls” is best understood as “looks back on,” not a product recall. The historical Nintendo recall report cited here concerns Wii Remote strap replacements and DS power adapters—hardware accessories, not these game releases (Game Developer).

What was the Tomodachi Life controversy?
The issue: same-sex relationships were not available
Tomodachi Life is a 3DS life simulation game whose characters can form relationships. In 2014, criticism focused on the fact that its relationship system did not allow same-sex relationships. Nintendo told the Associated Press that the game was not intended as social commentary, according to contemporary reporting by Nintendo Life.

- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
Nintendo’s apology and response
Nintendo apologized for the omission and said the game’s design could not be changed after release. Its statement, reproduced by TIME on May 9, 2014, said: “We apologize for disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life.” Nintendo also said that, if it made another installment, it would strive to create a more inclusive experience that better represented all players.
In a separate statement quoted by Nintendo Life, Nintendo of America described the game as “a whimsical and quirky game” and said it was “absolutely not trying to provide social commentary.” The controversy was therefore about a concrete limitation in the relationship system, alongside Nintendo’s stated intent and its apology—not a recall.

What changed in the Western release of Fire Emblem Fates?
A scene was altered in US and European versions
Fire Emblem Fates, a 3DS role-playing game, became a subject of debate over Western localization. Nintendo confirmed that the US and European release did not include an expression that might be considered gay conversion or drugging between characters. Nintendo of America’s statement to Nintendo World Report, reproduced by Nintendo Life, said: “In the version of the game that ships in the U.S. and Europe, there is no expression which might be considered as gay conversion or drugging that occurs between characters.”

Why the change drew debate
The change was part of localization, and coverage discussed it alongside the game’s same-sex relationship options. Calling the matter simply “censorship” obscures the relevant distinction: Nintendo confirmed a change to a scene in particular regional releases and described the expression it removed, while debate centered on the choice to alter the content for those releases. GameSpot’s coverage and Nintendo Life’s follow-up discuss the localization and relationship options.
Rank #3
- Create Mii characters for people you know, such as your friends, parents, your teacher, plus anyone else you've ever dreamt of befriending
- Characters in Tomodachi Life act as living, relatable characters with a voice and a personality all their own
- Players become the director to their Mii characters' lives by helping them find love and happiness

How the two controversies differed
| Game | Nature of the issue | Nintendo’s response | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tomodachi Life | Relationship-system design excluded same-sex relationships. | Apologized, said the shipped design could not be changed, and pledged to strive for a more inclusive future installment. | The game’s design as shipped. |
| Fire Emblem Fates | A scene was altered in Western localization. | Confirmed that the US and European versions omitted an expression it said might be considered gay conversion or drugging. | Regional releases, rather than a change to every version. |
Were these the “most controversial” games of the era?
These are documented examples, not a verified top-two list. The cited coverage establishes the specific issues and Nintendo’s responses, but it does not provide a ranking method or show that these were the most controversial titles across the 3DS and Wii U era. No comparable Wii U case is established by the sources cited here, and that limitation should not be mistaken for proof that no Wii U controversies occurred.
