A Nintendo Switch Lite can play a curated selection of retro games through Nintendo Classics memberships, but it cannot play 3DS or DS game cards. A used Nintendo 2DS or 3DS-family handheld is the Nintendo option for compatible original DS/DSi cards and 3DS games.
Choose by the games and access you need

Use a Switch Lite for a curated classic-game library
Nintendo lists Switch Lite among the systems that can access Nintendo Classics libraries. What is available depends on the library and membership tier, so check the relevant Nintendo Switch Online membership and library details before choosing this route.
- Game Boy and Game Boy Color: available with the base Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy: included with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy are listed in the Expansion Pack tier.
- GameCube Classics: available only on Nintendo Switch 2, not Switch Lite.
Nintendo Classics is a selection of games, not a way to run any original handheld release you own. Switch consoles are not backward compatible with older physical or digital games, and previous digital purchases from the 3DS eShop do not transfer to Switch. Nintendo describes the Game Boy Advance titles as reproductions for Switch and Switch 2; performance and presentation can differ from the original versions.
Membership, offline play, and extra features
Access to the classic-game libraries requires an active membership. Nintendo says games can be played offline for up to seven consecutive days, but the system periodically needs to verify membership online. The service also offers features such as suspend points, visual filters, rewind, and multiplayer for compatible titles; availability varies by game.

Choose a used 2DS or 3DS for original cartridges
A Nintendo 2DS or 3DS-family console is the better fit if you want to play compatible DS/DSi cards or 3DS games on their original platform. Nintendo says almost all DS and DSi games work on 3DS-family systems. Exceptions include some games that require accessories inserted into the DS Game Boy Advance slot.
DS and DSi games display at lower resolution by default on 3DS-family hardware and do not display in 3D. These limitations matter if you expect the same presentation as on a DS or DSi, or want to use a title-specific accessory.

Know what changed for the 3DS eShop and online services
Nintendo ended new purchases and free-content downloads through the 3DS eShop on March 27, 2023. Previously purchased games and DLC may still be redownloaded, and software updates may still be downloaded, for the foreseeable future. Nintendo does not promise that access will continue indefinitely.
Online play and other online communication for Nintendo 3DS-family software ended on April 8, 2024. Local features that do not rely on those online services are a separate matter, but online multiplayer is no longer available through the ended service.

Make the decision in three checks
- Name the exact games. If they are 3DS games or DS/DSi cards, choose compatible 2DS/3DS-family hardware. If they are among Nintendo’s available Classics titles, Switch Lite may suit you.
- Decide whether you need cartridges. Switch Lite does not read original DS or 3DS cards. For a selected digital retro library, confirm that the specific games you want are included in the membership library.
- Weigh ongoing access against original hardware. Switch Classics access depends on a paid membership and periodic online verification, even for offline play. A 2DS/3DS-family console preserves compatibility with supported original software, but the eShop no longer accepts new purchases and online play has ended.
