Ninite can install or update a group of popular Windows applications from one custom .exe file. You choose the programs on Ninite’s website, download the installer, and run it. Ninite handles the individual setup programs in the background, rejects common bundled extras such as toolbars, and uses each application’s default installation settings.
It is convenient, but it is not an offline software bundle and it cannot install every Windows program. The installer must connect to Ninite’s servers, and it only supports applications in Ninite’s curated catalog.
What Ninite does
Ninite creates a small installer based on the applications you select. When you run that file, Ninite obtains current application information, downloads the programs from their publishers’ official websites, verifies the downloads, and installs the selected software.
It automatically chooses suitable installers for the computer’s architecture and language where available. On a 64-bit PC, it generally selects 64-bit software; on supported ARM systems or where an ARM64 option exists, it can use the appropriate build. The exact choices depend on the application.

Ninite does not normally ask you to click through each application’s setup wizard. It automates or hides those installers, declines bundled extras, skips reboot requests, and installs programs in their normal default locations.
How to install several programs with Ninite
- Open ninite.com.
- Scroll through the application categories and select the checkbox beside each program you want. Categories include Web Browsers, Messaging, Media, Documents, Security, Utilities, Compression, and Developer Tools.
- Choose Get Your Ninite. Older Ninite help pages may call this button Get Installer; the current homepage uses Get Your Ninite.
- Save the downloaded
.exefile, then open it. - Allow the installer to run if Windows displays a User Account Control prompt.
- Wait while Ninite downloads and installs the selected programs. The process usually requires no input for each application.
The resulting file is tied to your selection. For example, an installer containing Firefox, VLC, 7-Zip, and LibreOffice will work on that group rather than installing the entire Ninite catalog.

The catalog includes many common desktop applications, though it is deliberately curated rather than unrestricted. Examples include:

The website’s live catalog and update feed are the reliable places to check what is currently supported. Application versions shown in older guides can become obsolete. Some runtime entries also have separate architecture or version choices, such as .NET Desktop Runtime variants and x86, x64, or ARM64 Visual C++ Redistributables.
Running the same installer again
You do not need to create a new installer every time you want to update the selected programs. Keep the downloaded Ninite file and run it again later. Ninite checks the installed versions, skips applications that are already current, and updates selected applications that are out of date.
This makes a saved installer useful after reinstalling Windows or when maintaining a small personal collection of standard applications. It does not turn Ninite into a general software-update tool: it only checks the applications represented by that installer and supported by the current catalog.

Important limitations

Ninite currently supports Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.x, Windows 7, and equivalent Server versions. Support for Windows XP, Vista, Server 2003, and Server 2008 ended on February 14, 2019.

Ninite’s result screen or report can distinguish between a failed download, a failed installation, and a skipped application. The wording matters because a skipped program is not necessarily an error.
Download failed
Run the Ninite installer again first. A temporary mirror or local network problem may have caused the failure. If the same application repeatedly fails, download and install it manually from the publisher’s official website.
Install failed
Restart Windows and retry the Ninite installer. If it fails again, install that application manually. The publisher’s installer may display an error that Ninite’s automated process hides.
Error 215 or certificate error
Check that the computer’s date and time are correct. Firewalls, web filters, and HTTP proxies can interfere with Ninite’s connections and certificate checks. Temporarily permitting Ninite traffic, according to your organization’s security policy, can help identify whether network filtering is the cause.

Create a new Ninite installer containing both the required .NET entry and the application that was skipped. Run that combined installer.

Skipped because the program is running or locked
Close the application being installed or updated and try again. In some cases, close the browser as well, particularly if the browser is the application Ninite is updating.
Skipped for another reason
Messages such as Skipped (up to date), Skipped (language not supported), Skipped (program running/locked), or Skipped (already installed/update not supported) describe different conditions. A line such as Chrome : Install failed - Could not verify installation (1), 1 – 2271 means Ninite could not install Chrome or could not confirm the resulting installation; it does not prove that no system changes occurred.
Network and proxy requirements
Ninite works best when a firewall or web filter is not blocking its servers, publisher download sites, or certificate validation. On managed networks, the proxy configuration is especially important. Ninite’s current documentation refers to the computer’s Internet Explorer proxy settings for proxy access, even though Internet Explorer itself has been retired.
If Ninite works on a home connection but fails on a company network, ask the network administrator whether the proxy or filtering system is blocking the required connections. Do not simply disable business security controls without permission.
Free Ninite versus Ninite Pro
The standard Ninite website is intended for straightforward desktop installation and updating. It is useful for setting up a personal PC, but it is not a full business deployment platform.
Ninite Pro adds centralized management for organizations. Its newer web interface displays machines as rows and applications as columns, allowing an administrator to select individual cells, machines, applications, or all machines for installation, updating, or removal. Commands can be queued for offline machines and delivered when they reconnect.

Ninite Pro also includes Pro Classic, which is aimed at scripts, RMM integrations, and command-line administration. The documented command-line features below are for Ninite Pro Classic, not the ordinary free installer:

NinitePro.exe /silent report.txt /repair /select Chrome FirefoxPro Classic also documents options for proxies, caching, remote machines, exclusions, uninstalling, and creating frozen offline installers with /freeze. Those switches should not be assumed to work with a free Ninite download.
Is Ninite safe to use?
Ninite downloads applications from official publisher locations and checks digital signatures or matching SHA-1 hashes before running them. It also removes or declines common bundled extras during supported installations.
That does not mean every application has identical behavior or that Ninite can eliminate every operating-system permission prompt. Review the applications you select, download Ninite from ninite.com, and avoid third-party sites offering modified Ninite installers.
Ninite reports limited, non-identifying diagnostic information after installations, including the Windows version, language, machine architecture, and installer failure status. The free version does not install a separate resident Ninite program.

Does Ninite install programs offline?
No. A standard Ninite installer stores your application selection and configuration, then contacts Ninite and downloads current programs when you run it. Ninite Pro can create frozen offline installers with the appropriate Pro Classic feature.

Can I choose where Ninite installs an application?
Not through the standard free Ninite workflow. Each application is installed in its normal default location, and Ninite does not provide a general destination-folder selector.
Can Ninite install any Windows application?
No. Ninite supports a curated catalog of applications and runtimes shown on its website. Programs outside that catalog cannot be added to a regular Ninite installer.
Does Ninite update applications later?
Yes. Run the same saved installer again. It skips selected programs that are current and updates selected programs that are out of date, subject to the application’s supported update behavior.

The current service supports Windows 7, Windows 8.x, Windows 10, Windows 11, and equivalent Server versions. Windows XP, Vista, Server 2003, and Server 2008 are no longer supported.
Why was an application skipped?
Common reasons include the application already being current, an unsupported update path, an unsupported language, a running or locked process, a missing .NET prerequisite, or another compatibility issue on that PC.
The Bottom Line
Ninite is an efficient way to set up or refresh a Windows PC with a known set of popular applications. Select the programs at ninite.com, click Get Your Ninite, and run the resulting file while connected to the Internet. Keep your expectations realistic: the catalog is limited, installation folders remain at their defaults, and some applications may be skipped. For centralized multi-PC deployment, offline packages, and command-line control, Ninite Pro is the relevant product.
