Possibly—but that is an analyst forecast, not a confirmed outcome. TheStreet reported that Morgan Stanley viewed Nike’s fiscal 2027 first quarter as “likely the year’s high-water mark.” Nike’s own outlook was cautious: the company forecast a high-single-digit revenue decline for fiscal 2027. The quarter ended August 31, 2026, and Nike reported results on October 1.
What the “best quarter” warning means
“This year” refers to Nike’s fiscal 2027, not calendar 2026. Morgan Stanley’s reported view is that the quarter Nike had just reported may prove to be its strongest of the fiscal year as the company works through declining sales. It is a prediction about future performance; Nike did not state that the quarter was its annual peak.
TheStreet attributed the “likely the year’s high-water mark” wording to a Morgan Stanley note. The underlying note and its detailed reasoning are not available here, so the claim should be read as an analyst’s interpretation rather than a published Nike forecast or a certain result.

What Nike reported for its fiscal first quarter
Nike’s fiscal first quarter ended August 31, 2026. Revenue was $11.2 billion, down 4% year over year on a reported basis and 5% on a currency-neutral basis. Diluted earnings per share were $0.48.

|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $11.2 billion | Down 4% reported; down 5% currency-neutral |
| Diluted EPS | $0.48 | Not stated in Nike’s release summary cited here |
| Gross margin | 42.8% | Up 60 basis points |
| Net income | $712 million | Down 2% from $727 million |
The figures are not uniformly negative: gross margin improved even as revenue and net income declined. CFO Dave Denton said results were “consistent with our expectations,” citing improved gross margin and disciplined cost management. That assessment describes the quarter’s delivery against Nike’s expectations; it does not imply that sales had returned to growth.
Where sales were weaker—and where scopes differ
The contrast between wholesale and Nike’s direct business helps explain why a better margin did not translate into revenue growth.

TheStreet separately reported that North American sales to retailers rose 9%. That is a regional figure and should not be confused with Nike’s official global wholesale comparison, which was down 1%. Nike said North American NIKE Brand revenue growth partially offset declines in Greater China and EMEA.

Nike’s full-year outlook is the clearest reason for caution
Nike forecast fiscal 2027 revenue to decline by a high-single-digit percentage. It also forecast adjusted diluted EPS of $1.15 to $1.35, excluding approximately $0.15 of Pace-related restructuring expenses for the year.
The EPS range is adjusted guidance, not a forecast of reported GAAP diluted EPS. The restructuring exclusion matters when comparing the range with the quarter’s $0.48 reported diluted EPS: they are different measures, and the full-year guidance specifically leaves out the stated restructuring amount. Nike described its outlook as forward-looking and subject to risks and uncertainties.

What the Pace transformation does—and does not—show
Nike says its Pace operating-model transformation is expected to generate approximately $2.5 billion in cumulative savings through fiscal 2031. The company also estimates approximately $1.0 billion in pre-tax charges through fiscal 2031, in addition to approximately $0.3 billion in severance costs recognized in fiscal 2026.

Nike says actual savings, charges and cash expenditures could differ materially from its estimates. The projected savings therefore do not establish that revenue will stabilize or that margins will keep improving during fiscal 2027.

How to interpret the warning
- The analyst view: Morgan Stanley, as reported by TheStreet, sees a possibility that Nike’s fiscal first quarter will be the year’s high point.
- The company’s signal: Nike’s own revenue outlook calls for a high-single-digit decline for fiscal 2027.
- The counterpoint: Gross margin rose 60 basis points, while revenue, net income and direct sales fell.
- The uncertainty: Neither the analyst prediction nor Nike’s forward-looking guidance guarantees how the remaining quarters will turn out.
Together, the quarter and outlook support a cautious reading: Nike delivered better gross margin than a year earlier, but its sales trends and full-year forecast leave open the possibility that the first quarter will be its strongest. The “high-water mark” label remains Morgan Stanley’s forecast as attributed by TheStreet, not a settled fact.
