To get started with Nightwatch.js, create a Node.js project, run npm init nightwatch, choose a local browser and end-to-end testing, then run the generated example with npx nightwatch ./nightwatch/examples. Nightwatch uses the W3C WebDriver API to automate browsers; the initializer creates a configuration file and sample tests to help you make your first run.
What you need before starting
- Node.js: Nightwatch’s getting-started guide has listed support for Node.js versions above v14.20, but runtime requirements can change. Check the current getting-started guide before choosing a Node version.
- A project directory: You can initialize a new project or run the setup wizard from an existing one.
- A browser: For the simplest first run, choose one desktop browser already installed on your machine. Browser and driver compatibility requirements vary; follow the current ChromeDriver guidance if using Chrome.
Create a Nightwatch project
- Open a terminal in your new or existing project directory.
- Run
npm init nightwatch. - In the setup wizard, choose end-to-end testing, your preferred language and runner, one locally installed browser, a test folder, and the base URL for your app. Select local execution to avoid configuring remote credentials at the outset.
- Allow the wizard to generate
nightwatch.conf.jsand sample tests. Review the generated configuration and update the base URL if it does not match the address where your app runs.
The choices and generated files are described in the Nightwatch getting-started guide. If the project already has a test setup, inspect its package scripts and configuration before replacing or duplicating them.
Run the generated example
Start your application if the selected base URL points to a local development server. Then run the example command documented by Nightwatch:
npx nightwatch ./nightwatch/examples
The command runs the generated tests in the configured browser. The guide shows assertion results in the terminal and an HTML report path in the output; use the printed path to open the report in a browser. If your wizard selected a different test directory, pass that directory instead.

Configure a local Chrome environment
Nightwatch test environments let you keep environment-specific settings separate while sharing the rest of the default configuration. For example, the environment guide documents installing Nightwatch and ChromeDriver, defining a chrome-local environment with browserName: 'chrome', and invoking it with npx nightwatch --env chrome-local. Follow the current environment configuration guide for the configuration format that matches your installed Nightwatch version.
WebDriver settings include process management through start_process and a driver server_path. These settings determine whether Nightwatch starts a driver process and where it finds the executable. See Webdriver Settings and the ChromeDriver guide for driver paths and browser capabilities. Keep Chrome and its driver compatible; an outdated or mismatched driver can prevent the browser session from starting.

Write a test that checks an outcome
A useful browser test performs an action and verifies something a user should observe: a page title, destination URL, visible message, or input value. Nightwatch supports selector-based element lookup and built-in assertions. Start with one meaningful expectation rather than checking many unrelated details in a single test.
Choose between assertion styles based on what should happen after a failure. An assert failure ends the test; a verify failure is logged while later checks continue. Use assert when subsequent steps depend on the condition being true, and verify when you want multiple independent checks reported in one run. Run locally or use a remote browser?

Nightwatch documents Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge, as well as Selenium Grid and cloud services including BrowserStack, Sauce Labs, and TestingBot. Start locally unless your coverage or execution needs call for remote infrastructure; provider pricing and plan limits depend on the service and are not established here.
Troubleshoot common first-run problems
- The command cannot find Nightwatch: Run it from the project directory where the initializer created the setup, and use
npx nightwatchas shown in the guide. Check that the project dependencies were installed successfully. - The browser session does not start: Confirm that the chosen browser is installed and that the configured driver path and browser capabilities are valid. For Chrome, check browser/ChromeDriver compatibility and the current driver instructions.
- The test opens the wrong page or cannot reach the app: Check the base URL in
nightwatch.conf.js, verify the development server is running, and confirm the test environment inherits the intended defaults. Nightwatch documents configuration settings and test environments. - The report is hard to locate: Read the terminal output after the test run and open the HTML report path printed there; report output may differ with configuration.
- A check fails but later checks do not run: Review whether the test uses
assert, which stops on failure, orverify, which continues after logging the failure.
