Nightwatch uses the W3C WebDriver API to automate browsers; the wizard creates configuration and sample tests for the options you select.
What Nightwatch.js does
Nightwatch.js is a Node.js test automation framework. Its browser automation uses the W3C WebDriver API, the standard protocol implemented by browser drivers. The official overview describes end-to-end testing across major browsers, as well as unit testing of Node.js services and integration testing of HTTP APIs. Its getting-started guide also offers setup paths for component, mobile, visual regression, and accessibility testing. These paths can require different dependencies, so choose the test type that fits your goal rather than assuming one configuration covers every kind of test. Nightwatch overview.
For a first project, use the quickstart wizard and run locally. You can later add test runners, test types, browsers, or remote execution as the project requires.
Install and scaffold a project
The Nightwatch getting-started page states that it supports Node versions above V14.20. Because Node and Nightwatch compatibility can change, check the current installation guidance before choosing a Node version. Nightwatch getting started.

Run the generated sample
From the project directory, run the documented example command:
npx nightwatch ./nightwatch/examples
This runs the example folder as the test source. Nightwatch’s CLI also accepts one or more test files or a folder, with options following the source: npx nightwatch [source] [options]. For example, once you know your own test path, pass that file or directory instead. See the CLI documentation.
The quickstart shows an HTML report path under tests_output/nightwatch-html-report/index.html. Treat that as the documented example output: report generation and exact output can depend on your configuration.
Understand the browser configuration
Nightwatch sends WebDriver commands through a browser driver. Its overview lists Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge, and describes Selenium Server/Grid for distributing execution across WebDriver nodes. A local setup and a remote grid setup are distinct: local execution needs a browser and compatible driver, while remote execution points Nightwatch at a server or provider.
Local Chrome and ChromeDriver
The local Chrome environment guide demonstrates installing nightwatch and chromedriver from npm, defining environments under test_settings, and selecting Chrome through desiredCapabilities. It also uses a required default environment from which named environments inherit. Use your own application URL in configuration rather than copying a documentation demo URL. Browser and driver compatibility is version-sensitive; consult the current guide when setup errors indicate a mismatch. Local Chrome environment guide.

Test code and the browser object
Nightwatch test scripts use the browser object as their main API object. The API reference notes that browser is also available globally starting with Nightwatch 2. If you follow an older example that uses client, do not assume it is interchangeable with a current example; follow the syntax for your installed Nightwatch version. Nightwatch API reference.
When to move tests to a remote grid or cloud
Remote execution is useful when you need browser environments that are not installed locally, coverage across hosted browser and operating-system combinations, or distributed runs. Nightwatch documents Selenium Server/Grid and cloud integrations including BrowserStack and Sauce Labs. Remote configuration requires an endpoint and provider-specific account credentials or keys; the docs do not imply that cloud access or credentials are included. Begin locally, then configure remote execution under test_settings when the coverage or scale need justifies it. Cloud provider guide.
Troubleshoot a first run
-
The setup command does not run: Confirm Node.js and npm are installed and available in the terminal, then check the current Nightwatch installation requirements. The documented version statement is a moving compatibility detail, not a guarantee for every future release.
-
The browser fails to start locally: Confirm the selected browser is installed and that the local browser driver is installed and compatible. For the documented Chrome path, check the Nightwatch and ChromeDriver installation and configuration in
test_settings. -
No tests are found: Check that the command points to the correct test file or folder, and run it from the intended project directory. The CLI source can be a file or folder.

The test opens the wrong site: Review the configured base URL and environment settings. The wizard’s shown default is
http://localhost, which may not be your application’s address. -
A remote run cannot connect: Verify the configured remote host and port, provider endpoint, and required credentials or access keys. Remote configuration is separate from local ChromeDriver setup.

A newer guide’s example differs from your project: Check the installed Nightwatch version and use matching documentation, particularly for browser API names and setup choices.
Or skip the browser setup
If your task is to capture a page screenshot rather than automate an interactive test, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server. This does not replace Nightwatch for browser tests; it is an alternative for screenshot capture.
Example cURL request, with the API key and target URL replaced for your use:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It can accept cookie/consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add another browser or test type after the wizard?
Yes. The wizard choices are a starting configuration; Nightwatch documents additional test types and browser environments that you can configure as the project evolves.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does Nightwatch require Selenium for a local Chrome test?
The documented local Chrome setup uses Nightwatch and ChromeDriver. Selenium Server/Grid is a separate option for remote or distributed execution.
