To apply it broadly, add async to each applicable server export, reload or re-export the configuration using your system’s supported method, and verify the active options. This changes durability behavior: the server may acknowledge writes before they reach stable storage.
What “async” does on an NFS server
The Linux exports(5) manual defines async as allowing the server to reply before changes from a request have been committed to stable storage. That can improve performance, but an unclean server restart—such as a crash—can cause data loss or corruption. The manual does not quantify the performance gain, so do not assume a particular throughput improvement.
By contrast, sync makes the server wait until changes have been committed to stable storage before replying. See the Debian exports(5) manual for these option definitions and their durability implications.
How to apply async to every applicable export
- Review each export. Identify which exported datasets can tolerate the risk of acknowledged writes not yet being committed to stable storage. Do not enable
asyncindiscriminately where crash durability matters. - Edit each export definition. Add
asyncto the option list for every export where you intend to use it. Theexportfs(8)manual describes export options and their defaults. - Reload or re-export the configuration. Use the export-management procedure supported by your distribution and management layer. There is no single reload command established for every Linux system.
- Inspect the active exports. Run
exportfs -vand check the options in effect. The Linux NFS FAQ describes verbose output as a way to view export options.
Check the effective setting, not just the displayed word
Modern nfs-utils defaults to sync, so async must be requested explicitly. The documented historical exception is nfs-utils versions up to and including 1.0.0, when async was the default; later releases use sync by default, according to the Debian exports(5) manual.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
exportfs -v can show async when it is set. A missing sync entry in the output can be misleading because it is the default; do not treat the absence of that word as proof that an export is asynchronous. Verify the effective options using the verbose output and your system’s export configuration.
Do not confuse server exports with client mount options
The async option in exports(5) controls when the NFS server acknowledges changes relative to stable storage. NFS client mount settings govern client-side behavior and do not create a global server export setting. When investigating write performance or durability, evaluate the server export and client mount layers separately. The Linux NFS client manual documents client-side mount behavior.

Is there a global switch?
For Linux NFS servers using nfs-utils, the documented control is an export option, not a single setting that changes every export. “Globally” therefore means applying async to each applicable export and reloading the export configuration. This answer is specific to Linux nfs-utils; it does not establish how other NFS server implementations or storage appliances expose their controls.
