NFC problems on LineageOS and other custom ROMs have different causes depending on what fails: NFC may be missing or refuse to turn on, the phone may not detect tags, or only contactless payments may fail. Check the exact phone’s LineageOS support page and firmware requirements first, then test tag reading separately from Google Wallet. A payment rejection can reflect security eligibility—not a broken NFC radio.
First identify what “NFC not working” means
Before changing software or firmware, pin down the symptom. Record the phone’s exact model, LineageOS build and date, whether the problem began after installation or an update, and whether NFC worked on the same phone with its stock operating system.
- NFC is missing from Settings or will not turn on: The issue concerns whether the operating system exposes or enables NFC.
- The phone does not read a known NFC tag: Test general NFC operation with a tag or reader you know works.
- Tags work, but Google Wallet tap to pay does not: Investigate wallet setup and device security eligibility separately.
- Payment or card emulation fails only with the screen off or phone locked: Check the Android version and Secure NFC behavior; that symptom is not the same as a general tag-reading failure.
These distinctions matter: a Wallet security rejection does not establish that the phone’s NFC hardware or antenna is defective.

Use the official LineageOS installation page for your exact device, including its prerequisites and known quirks. The hotdogb page is an example of device-specific installation guidance, not instructions to apply to other models. Check any required stock firmware baseline carefully; LineageOS warns that missing required firmware can cause installation failure, unexpected crashes, or permanent damage. Never use a firmware package intended for a different model.
#1 Best Overall
- It not only supports Mifare cards and Class A and B cards conforming to the ISO 14443 standard, but also supports NFC and FeliCa contactless technology.
- This is a USB hot-pluggable device that complies with the CCID standard and is ideal for applications such as personal identity security authentication and online micropayments.
- This is a USB full-speed device (12 Mbps), which reads NFC tags at 106 kbps、212 Kbps and 242 Kbps, allowing faster read and write speeds and higher efficiency
- To increase the safety factor, you can choose to configure an ISO7816-3 compliant SAM card slot in the ACR122.
- Widely used in areas such as access control, electronic payment, bus e-ticketing, highway toll collection systems, network verification, logistics, and supply chain management.
LineageOS’s support charter says: “All devices with NFC supported in their stock OS MUST support NFC.” See the NFC section of the LineageOS device support requirements. This is a project requirement, not proof that every unofficial build, firmware combination, or individual phone is working correctly.
Device build instructions can also involve proprietary blobs, as shown in the LineageOS build guide for beyond2lte. That is another reason to follow the requirements for your model; it does not by itself show that a missing blob caused your NFC problem.

Test tag reading before troubleshooting payments
If NFC appears in Settings and can be enabled, test it with a known-working NFC tag or reader. This helps separate a general NFC problem from a Wallet-only one. If the phone cannot detect any known-working tag, return to the device-specific support page and verify the installation prerequisites before attempting further changes.

If NFC is absent, will not enable, or still cannot read a tag after you confirm those requirements, gather the exact model, LineageOS build and date, firmware baseline, and a description of the tag or reader you tested. Share those details with the support channel for that device. The official documentation does not establish a universal reset, firmware flash, or hardware repair that is safe for every model.

If only Google Wallet tap to pay fails
Google states that in-store payments may not work when a phone runs a custom ROM, has rooted or modified factory software, or has an unlocked bootloader. Consequently, successful tag reading alongside failed payment can point to a separate eligibility restriction, not a failure of NFC itself. Google’s guidance does not support promising that reinstalling Wallet, changing an NFC setting, or hiding root will restore payment eligibility.
For a payment-only issue, use Google’s current troubleshooting steps to check the basic setup:

- New PN5321 IC
- Confirm that the phone supports NFC and that NFC is enabled.
- Check that the intended payment app is the default.
- Verify that a payment card is set up and that the phone has a screen lock.
- Check the device’s certification and security status against Google’s requirements.
- Unlock the phone before attempting a payment, where required.
Google’s guidance is available in Fix issues with “Tap to pay” transactions done via cards and Fix problems with tap to pay transactions. Passing basic setup checks does not guarantee that a custom-ROM device is eligible.

Host-based card emulation (HCE) behavior can depend on screen state and Secure NFC configuration. If a card-emulation or payment symptom occurs only while the display is off or the phone is locked, consult the Android version’s settings and the relevant service’s requirements. Android explains these conditions in its Host-based card emulation overview. This branch applies to screen-state-dependent HCE behavior; it does not diagnose a phone that cannot read ordinary tags.

What to avoid before you know the cause
- Do not flash firmware for another model or skip a device-specific firmware prerequisite.
- Do not treat failed contactless payment as proof of a defective NFC antenna.
- Do not assume that a general-purpose reset, another ROM flash, or hardware replacement is the right fix without the device model and symptom.
The safe next step depends on what failed: verify model-specific installation requirements for missing or nonfunctional NFC, test known tags for basic operation, and use Google’s security and setup checks for payment-only failures.
