The available evidence does not establish a personal migration or show that Control D is better than NextDNS. What it does support is a practical comparison: choose based on the filtering controls you need, how you assign policies to devices, what logs you use, and where you configure DNS. Treat the headline’s “I replaced” verdict as unverified unless the author can provide their setup and observations.
What changes when you switch?
Both services are configurable DNS-filtering services, but the comparison should be about the features and workflows you will actually use—not an assumed universal winner. NextDNS describes security threat blocking, ad and tracker blocking, parental controls, analytics, and logs on its service page. A secondary comparison published by Dnsium on August 22, 2026 describes Control D as offering traffic redirection and per-device profiles, and NextDNS as emphasizing a free tier and query-log dashboards. That comparison is not enough to establish current feature parity or personal-plan limits, so verify the features and terms on the providers’ own pages before switching.
Compare the services on four practical questions
Which filtering and control options do you need?
Start with the specific controls you plan to use: security and content-filtering categories, parental controls, allow or deny rules, and—if relevant—traffic redirection. NextDNS lists broad filtering and protection categories on its homepage; Control D’s business pricing page lists rules and profiles for the business plans displayed there. Business-plan features do not establish what is included in a personal plan, and DNS filtering should not be treated as a guarantee that every ad, tracker, or threat will be blocked.
Do you need different policies for different devices?
Device identity matters when a household or network needs separate policies—for example, different settings for a child’s device and an adult’s device. The secondary comparison describes per-device profiles for Control D, but it does not establish the exact configuration or current personal-plan limits. For NextDNS, its CLI project wiki documents a profile ID as part of setup. Before migrating, check how each service identifies your devices and whether the identity remains usable with your chosen client, router, or operating-system configuration.

What logs and analytics do you rely on?
NextDNS’s API documentation describes profile-log queries that can be filtered by time bounds, device, status, and search terms. That can be useful when investigating a blocked request, but the API parameters alone do not establish how long your selected plan retains data or which dashboard features it includes.
Control D’s business pricing page, as accessed October 8, 2026, lists 30 days of raw query-data retention and up to one year of analytics retention for the business plans displayed. Those are business-plan terms; do not assume they apply to personal plans. Check each service’s current plan and privacy information against the kinds of troubleshooting data you want and the retention period you are comfortable with.

Where will you configure DNS?
You can configure DNS on individual devices, through a client, or at a router, depending on what the device and network support. The NextDNS CLI project wiki describes its CLI as a DNS53-to-DoH proxy with local caching, and documents host- or router-level operation. It also requires a profile ID for setup. Router support and client behavior vary, so confirm compatibility for your own equipment rather than assuming a single setup works everywhere.

Check plan terms before moving
The available official material does not provide a complete, current comparison of personal-plan prices, free-tier limits, privacy policies, log controls, or feature parity. Review the providers’ current personal-plan and policy pages before committing. A secondary comparison’s description of a free tier is not a substitute for checking the current limits and terms directly.

Make the switch measurable
A move between DNS providers does not, by itself, prove faster resolution, more reliable service, stronger privacy, better blocking, or easier setup. Those conclusions require a defined test or current policy evidence. If performance is decisive, compare the same devices and network conditions, state the resolver configuration and test locations, and report the sample size and measurement method. For filtering, test the specific domains and services that matter to you, including any legitimate sites or apps that a rule might disrupt.
Before changing DNS across a whole network, try the new profile on one device. Confirm that ordinary browsing and important apps work, check the log when a request fails, and adjust the relevant policy. Then roll the configuration out to other devices or the router if the results fit your needs. Keep your previous settings available until the new setup is working as intended.
