Nextcloud Talk is Nextcloud’s app for messaging and audio/video calls. It can also support screen sharing, file attachments, guest participation and other collaboration features. Talk is not a standalone hosted service by default: it must be installed and enabled on a Nextcloud server, so the experience depends on who operates that server and how it is configured.
What is Nextcloud Talk?
Nextcloud describes Talk as its chat, video and audio conferencing solution. It brings conversations and calls into the wider Nextcloud collaboration platform, where users can share files and work with other integrated tools. Talk is an optional app, not a feature that is automatically available in every Nextcloud installation. Nextcloud Talk and the Nextcloud administration documentation explain the product and its deployment.
Talk may suit a team that already uses Nextcloud for files and groupware, or an organization that wants control over where its collaboration service runs. That control comes with responsibility: someone must operate and maintain the Nextcloud server, and the operator determines its hosting location, configuration and supported versions.
What can you do with Talk?
- Message: Have one-to-one and group conversations, with attachments and reactions.
- Call: Start audio or video calls associated with conversations.
- Collaborate: Share a screen, link conversations with Nextcloud files and online office tools, and invite guests where configured.
- Connect across servers: Nextcloud describes federated conversations between Nextcloud servers.
- Protect some calls: Nextcloud’s product page describes end-to-end encrypted calls as a capability. This is distinct from self-hosting, and should not be read as a claim that every Talk call or message is end-to-end encrypted.
Feature availability and behavior can vary with the installed Nextcloud and Talk versions and the server’s configuration. The Talk user manual documents call, screen-sharing, guest and moderator features; check the manual for the versions actually in use.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What you need to set up Talk
- Choose who operates Nextcloud. Decide whether your organization will manage the server or use a hosting provider. Confirm the data-hosting location, maintenance responsibilities and support arrangements.
- Install and enable Talk. A Nextcloud administrator must add and enable the optional Talk app. Talk integrations also depend on the app being enabled.
- Check versions and clients. Requirements change across releases. Nextcloud’s Server 35 administration documentation recommends recent Firefox or Google Chrome/Chromium for the full video-call and screen-sharing experience. Consult the requirements for the specific server release you deploy, and check the separate mobile-app requirements if users will call from phones.
- Configure network support for calls. STUN and TURN can help with connectivity, especially where firewalls or network address translation interfere. For larger meetings, evaluate whether a High Performance Backend is appropriate.
A USB headset with a microphone is an optional way to improve call audio; Talk’s manual documents microphone selection but does not require or endorse a specific device.
How many people can join a Talk call?
There is no single participant limit that applies to every Talk deployment. In ordinary peer-to-peer calls, each participant sends a stream to the other participants. Upstream bandwidth and the devices’ ability to decode multiple video streams can therefore constrain quality and practical group size.

Nextcloud’s current Talk product guidance says a typical private setup handles dozens of calls with about 6–10 participants each. It says up to 20 may be possible in favorable network conditions when video is not used. These are vendor-provided rules of thumb, not independent benchmark results or a guaranteed limit. See Nextcloud’s Talk guidance.
When TURN may help
Nextcloud supports STUN and recommends a local TURN server to improve connectivity. TURN relays traffic, which can help participants connect through restrictive networks, but Nextcloud warns that relayed traffic consumes substantial network capacity. Consider the connectivity benefit alongside the bandwidth and operating requirements.

When to consider the High Performance Backend
For larger meetings and webinars, Nextcloud’s High Performance Backend (HPB) handles signaling and media forwarding. It can support much larger calls, but requires dedicated bandwidth and processing; it is an additional service to deploy or obtain, not a guarantee that an ordinary Talk installation will scale to webinar size.
Nextcloud’s HPB requirements page gives an example minimum configuration of 8 GB RAM, 32 GB of free disk and a four-core i7/Xeon CPU with AES support, estimating that setup for about 150 concurrent users. That is a vendor estimate for an example configuration, not a promise of capacity. Actual needs depend on workload and meeting composition. Check the HPB requirements.

Privacy: what self-hosting does and does not mean
Self-hosting gives the organization operating Nextcloud control over its infrastructure and administration. It does not, by itself, prove that every call is end-to-end encrypted or that the server stores no conversation data.
Nextcloud’s personal-data inventory says that, when Talk is enabled, stored personal data includes chat messages and reactions, call participants and timestamps, and conversation membership. If recording is enabled, recordings are stored as files in the initiating user’s storage. The product page also says users can disable message sent/received status indicators; that setting does not change what the server stores. See Nextcloud’s administration documentation and Talk product information.

Ways to obtain and operate Nextcloud
| Option | Who operates the server? | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Self-managed | Your organization | Maintenance expertise, hosting location, network capacity, support needs and Talk configuration. |
| Managed provider | A hosting or service provider, according to its terms | Data location, maintenance and support commitments, Talk availability and capacity, and total cost. |
| Enterprise subscription | Depends on the deployment arrangement | Included services and support, Talk’s optional extra cost, user minimums and current plan pricing. |
Nextcloud’s partner directory lists providers offering services such as hosting, installation, migration, configuration, management and performance optimization. The terms and capabilities vary by provider; confirm Talk support and data location directly. Browse Nextcloud partners.
Nextcloud’s enterprise pricing page lists Talk as optional at extra cost in enterprise plans and displays plan-specific pricing and a 100-user minimum. Those figures are not a general price for all Talk deployments and can change, so verify the current terms on Nextcloud’s pricing page before deciding.
Is Nextcloud Talk right for you?
Talk is a reasonable candidate when you want chat and calls integrated with Nextcloud and have a clear plan for operating the server—your own team, a managed provider or another deployment arrangement. The main decision is not just whether Talk has the features you need, but whether the deployment can meet your requirements for maintenance, data location, privacy, support and call capacity.
Quick Recap
- For small teams: Start by assessing ordinary call quality on your actual networks and devices. Consider TURN if participants have connection problems.
- For larger meetings: Evaluate HPB capacity, dedicated bandwidth and processing, and the operational cost of self-management versus a hosted or partner-supported option.
- For privacy-sensitive use: Review what the server stores, who administers it, where it is hosted and whether the specific call mode you need supports end-to-end encryption.
