Use a parallel route slot to render the overlay and an intercepting route to show a destination as a modal during client-side navigation. Keep the ordinary destination page in its own route: the URL then works both as a shareable modal destination and as a full page when opened directly or refreshed.
How the pattern works
A parallel route is a named slot in a layout. Its folder name begins with @, such as @auth; the name is passed to the layout as a prop and does not become part of the URL. The layout can render that slot beside its normal children content. The implicit children prop is itself a slot. See Next.js Parallel Routes.
An intercepting route lets client-side navigation show a destination inside the current layout rather than replacing the entire page. For example, clicking a link to /login can display a login modal while the browser URL becomes /login. Opening or refreshing that URL directly renders the standalone login page. Set up a route that works as both a modal and a page
This login example places the page and modal versions side by side. It uses current App Router conventions; Next.js 16 requires an explicit default.tsx in every parallel route slot.

}Parallel slots can retain their active subpages during client navigation even when those subpages do not match the new URL. On a hard navigation or refresh, Next.js cannot restore unmatched slot state and uses the slot’s default file. Missing fallbacks can cause a 404 or error depending on the route and framework version. Next.js 16 requires explicit defaults for all parallel slots; consult the Next.js 16 upgrade guide and the default.js reference.
Keep the destination content reusable
Render the login content directly from app/login/page.tsx. In app/@auth/(.)login/page.tsx, render that same content inside your modal component. Keeping the content separate from the modal wrapper makes it possible to reuse it without coupling the page’s content to overlay behavior.

Choose the correct interception matcher
Matchers count route segments, not the number of folders in the filesystem. In particular, a named @slot folder is not a URL segment. That is why this route can use (.)login inside @auth to intercept a route at the same segment level.

Make dismissal predictable
Choose dismissal behavior based on how the modal was opened. If a user arrived from a meaningful previous page, browser-history navigation with router.back() returns to that context. If the modal needs an explicit close action that does not rely on prior history, navigate to a route that matches the modal slot and returns null.
For a slot that might otherwise remain active when users navigate to unrelated paths, a catch-all route in that slot can return null to clear it. Do not assume an unmatched slot will automatically disappear during soft navigation: parallel routes can preserve active slot state. The Parallel Routes documentation describes these navigation behaviors.

When to use an intercepted modal
This pattern is useful when the destination should remain a real, directly accessible page but opening it from another screen is more useful as an overlay. Consider three questions before using it:
- Must the destination work on its own? Keep a full-page route for direct visits, refreshes, and shared links.
- Does the underlying page matter? A modal is valuable when users benefit from retaining context, such as opening a photo from a feed.
- How should users leave? Decide whether browser back should close the overlay, whether the close button needs a deliberate destination, and how navigation to other paths clears the slot.
Other documented examples include opening login from a navbar or showing a shopping cart in a side modal. The right choice depends on preserving the current page context and defining sensible history and close behavior.
