Mr Say Nothing’s newsletter server is a small, self-hosted system built with TypeScript, Svelte, SQL and Node’s SQLite interface. The author reports that it totals 1,258 lines and handles sign-ups, consent confirmation, unsubscribes and sending posts from a command line. It is a case study in keeping subscriber data and code directly inspectable—not evidence that self-hosting is the best choice for every newsletter.
What the 1,258-line server includes
The author describes a system designed for a small list and a cadence of one email per post. Its subscriber records live in a SQLite database file, and its sending workflow takes a post from a file. A dry-run mode renders the text and HTML versions for review before sending.
The reported line count breaks down to 215 lines for the command-line interface and 1,043 lines for consent-related functionality. These are the author’s counts for this implementation, not a measure of how much code every newsletter server needs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- A
subscriberstable tracks the constrained statespending,confirmedandunsubscribed. - A
sendstable provides an audit trail. - A health endpoint reports whether the service is operating.
- Double opt-in and one-click unsubscribe handle subscriber consent and removal.
The author’s compact description is: “A newsletter is three endpoints, two tables, and one email header most platforms hide from you.” It captures the appeal of a system with few moving parts, but the implementation still requires the operator to understand and maintain those parts.

Why choose self-hosting over a newsletter platform?
For this author, the case was specific: the list was small, sending volume was one email per post, and other site services already ran in the same environment. Keeping subscriber information in a copyable SQLite file and being able to inspect the code mattered more than having a hosted service manage the workflow.
That trade-off is not simply “control versus convenience.” The practical choice depends on how much operational work you want to take on and which features you need.
| Consideration | Self-hosted system | Hosted newsletter platform |
|---|---|---|
| Data custody | Subscriber records can remain in a database file you control and can inspect. | Data is managed by a service; portability depends on its export capabilities and terms. |
| Delivery | You are responsible for sender authentication, sending infrastructure and delivery troubleshooting. | The service may provide sending infrastructure and reputation, but correct domain authentication and inbox placement still matter. |
| Operations | You maintain the application, database backups, process supervision and sending workflow. | The service handles much of the infrastructure, in exchange for relying on its product and operating model. |
| Features | The described system has one list, no segments, no open tracking and no built-in scheduling beyond a manual or timer-triggered CLI run. | Feature availability varies by service; check the specific product for segmentation, scheduling and tracking needs. |
There is no list-size threshold established here at which self-hosting becomes preferable. The more useful question is whether the value of owning the data and implementation outweighs the time and expertise required to run them.

How consent and unsubscribe work in this implementation
New subscribers start in a pending state and must confirm through a link before becoming confirmed. The confirmation and unsubscribe links use signed HMAC tokens rather than a server-side session or token table. The author says a confirmation link can still work when the database is unavailable: “A confirm link that still works when the database is asleep is one less thing that can rot.”
The author reports that unsubscribe tokens do not expire and that the signing key is kept outside the repository. The implementation also uses a honeypot field, request limits and resend limits, and responses intended not to reveal whether an address is already subscribed. These are design choices described by the author, not independently audited security properties or a general security recipe.
For one-click unsubscribe, the handler accepts a cross-origin POST because an email receiver may initiate the request. The signed token authorizes the action. This behavior corresponds to the mechanism in IETF RFC 8058, which defines one-click functionality through list-unsubscribe headers.

Google’s Gmail sender guidelines require senders sending more than 5,000 messages per day to Gmail accounts to support one-click unsubscribe for marketing and subscribed messages, as well as a visible unsubscribe link. Google specifies the List-Unsubscribe-Post: List-Unsubscribe=One-Click and List-Unsubscribe headers. This threshold is specific to messages sent to Gmail accounts; it should not be read as a universal rule for all recipients or providers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat it takes to get mail delivered
Running a sending application does not by itself establish that messages will reach inboxes. Google says all senders to personal Gmail accounts must meet baseline requirements, including SPF or DKIM authentication, valid forward and reverse DNS, TLS and keeping the reported spam rate below its stated threshold. For senders above 5,000 messages per day to Gmail accounts, Google adds SPF, DKIM and DMARC requirements, including alignment requirements for direct mail.
Google notes that authentication can make messages less likely to be rejected or marked as spam; it does not guarantee inbox placement. A relay can provide sending infrastructure, but the sender still needs to verify that the sending domain is authenticated correctly and follow provider requirements.

The author reports a Mail-Tester score of about 5/10 before DKIM alignment and says stricter receivers could junk the mail. That score describes this server at the time of the author’s report; it is not a controlled comparison or a typical score for self-hosted newsletters. The author identifies an email relay as a possible response if the list’s needs justify one.

The system keeps its feature set narrow: it has one list, no segments, no open tracking and no built-in scheduling beyond running the CLI manually or with a timer. That may suit a publication that sends one email per post, but it is a poor fit if campaigns depend on audience targeting, scheduled workflows or engagement analytics.

The author describes copying and restoring the SQLite database file as the backup approach and notes that the database uses WAL mode. Treat that as the approach reported for this application, not a blanket guarantee that copying a live SQLite/WAL database is safe in every setup. Process supervision is also the operator’s responsibility.

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
Three reported implementation issues illustrate where a small application can still demand debugging:
- A container build failed because the esbuild install script had not been approved in the pnpm setup.
- A same-origin/CSRF check conflicted with Gmail’s cross-origin unsubscribe POST.
- Delivery performance was weak before DKIM alignment.
These are the author’s incidents, not universal failure modes. They do show that owning a short codebase also means owning the integration details around builds, email-client behavior and sender authentication.
