Jagex has announced a new RuneScape MMO in development, using “RS4” as a working title. The company says it will be a separate game, made by a separate team, and will coexist with RuneScape and Old School RuneScape (OSRS). Its engine, supported platforms, release window, gameplay details and account-transfer policy have not been confirmed in the accessible announcement.
Is a new RuneScape MMO actually happening?
Yes. Jagex announced the project during its RuneFest livestream on October 3, 2026. The studio called it “RS4” as a working title, so that should not be treated as the final product name. In its announcement in the official RuneScape subreddit, Jagex said it is too early to answer most questions about the project.
Jagex describes the MMO as a separate experience designed by a separate team. It says the new game will live alongside both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape, rather than being announced as a replacement for either one.

What engine will the new RuneScape MMO use?

Do not confuse this project with RuneScape: Dragonwilds. In a March 31, 2025 announcement, Jagex identified Unreal Engine 5 as the engine for Dragonwilds, a separate survival game. That detail does not establish which engine the new MMO will use.
Will it be on PC, console or mobile?
No supported platforms have been specified in the accessible announcement. There is no confirmed information about PC, console or mobile releases, or about cross-play and cross-progression.

Jagex linked to a reveal page at runescape.com/4, which redirected to play.runescape.com/4 and could not be accessed for verification. As a result, the announcement does not provide a basis for promising availability on any platform.
How might it differ from Old School RuneScape?
The confirmed difference is that Jagex presents the new MMO as a separate game with its own development team, intended to exist alongside OSRS and RuneScape. The announcement does not explain how it will differ in art direction, combat, progression, world design or monetization. It also does not say whether accounts or progress will connect to either existing game.

That means the project’s “RS4” working title is not evidence that it will replace RuneScape, and the coexistence statement is not a promise about how players, accounts or features will be shared. Those details remain unannounced.

Jagex said the new project does not change its current commitment to the existing games: “There’s no change in focus, commitment or resources we’re putting into RS & OS to support this.” This is the company’s stated position at the October 3, 2026 announcement; it should not be read as a guarantee about future budgets, schedules or development decisions.
