A newly disclosed Composer vulnerability, CVE-2026-59948, can let a malicious package write attacker-controlled files outside a project when Composer resolves or installs it. The flaw is serious, but it is not an attack on every Composer user: exploitation requires a malicious or compromised package to be present in the dependency graph. Upgrade to Composer 2.10.2 or 2.2.29, or a later patched release, and avoid using untrusted third-party repositories directly.

What CVE-2026-59948 does

The Composer project published CVE-2026-59948 on July 1, 2026, with a CVSS v3.1 score of 7.0 (High). The vulnerability is an arbitrary-file-write flaw caused by Composer failing to validate a package name supplied through malicious package metadata. During a normal install or update, affected Composer versions could write files outside both the vendor/ directory and the project itself. The advisory names shell startup files, SSH authorized_keys files, and cron entries as examples of potentially targeted locations. Read the Composer security advisory.

Who is at risk—and what “widespread” means

The attack depends on a package with malicious or compromised metadata being included in the dependency graph, and on a user running Composer against that graph. A vulnerable version alone does not make Composer remotely exploitable against any machine. In the advisory’s words, “It is a supply-chain issue: it requires a malicious or compromised package to be present in the dependency graph, it is not otherwise remotely exploitable against a machine.”

This makes repository trust and package validation important parts of the risk. A package can be a direct dependency or arrive through another dependency; the key condition is that it is included in the graph Composer processes. The official advisory does not report a count of affected users or confirmed exploitation cases, so “widespread” should be understood as the potential reach of a supply-chain flaw, not a measured incident total.

Which Composer versions are affected

Composer version Status Action
>= 2.3.0, < 2.10.2 Affected, according to the Composer advisory Upgrade to 2.10.2 or later
>= 1.0, < 2.2.29 Affected, according to the Composer advisory Move to a safe 2.x release, such as 2.2.29 or later
2.10.2 and 2.2.29 Patched releases Use one of these or a later patched release

Composer 1.x is affected; the project’s guidance is to move to a safe 2.x release. Composer 2.10.2 was released on July 1, 2026, and its changelog lists package-name validation among its security fixes. The same release also fixes a separate bin-path traversal issue. Check the Composer changelog.

How to reduce the risk

Upgrade Composer

Use Composer 2.10.2 or 2.2.29, or a later patched release. The fix validates every package produced during dependency resolution before Composer writes it to composer.lock or installs it. If a package name does not match valid vendor/package syntax, Composer aborts with a security error.

Review third-party repositories

The advisory says Packagist.org and Private Packagist validate package names correctly. For organizations that need packages from untrusted third-party repositories, Composer recommends not using those repositories directly; mirror them through an internal repository, such as Private Packagist. A mirror is a repository-control measure, not a substitute for running a patched Composer version. See Composer’s repository documentation.

  • Check which Composer version runs in developer environments, build agents, and deployment jobs.
  • Upgrade each environment that uses an affected version.
  • Identify third-party repositories in use and assess whether policy requires an internal mirror.
  • If an affected Composer run processed a dependency graph from a repository you do not trust, investigate the machine and its files using your organization’s incident-response process; the advisory’s examples indicate why checking only the project directory may not be enough.

Do not confuse it with CVE-2026-59946

Composer disclosed another issue, CVE-2026-59946, in the same release. It concerns a malicious package’s bin entry containing .. path segments, which could cause Composer to change permissions on an existing file outside the package directory. The advisory rates it Moderate (CVSS v3.1 6.1). It describes a permissions change only—not reading, modifying, or executing the target file’s contents. A restrictive-permission file, such as a private key, could become accessible to other local users.

Its note that the project found no evidence of an exploiting published package applies to that separate issue; it is not evidence about exploitation of CVE-2026-59948. Read the CVE-2026-59946 advisory.
