A refurbished laptop can be the better buy when its exact specifications suit your needs and the seller clearly states its testing, battery condition, warranty, and return terms. Choose new if you want unused equipment, a fresh battery, and current hardware with fewer condition questions. Compare the actual models and terms—not just the labels or headline prices.
Compare the actual laptops, not the categories
“New” and “refurbished” do not tell you whether a laptop is fast enough, how long it will remain useful, or what it will cost to own. Start by comparing the specific configurations. Check the processor and its generation, memory, storage capacity, display, and ports against the software and tasks you expect to use.
A refurbished higher-tier laptop may offer a better fit than a new entry-level model, but that depends on the models and their condition. Also consider how old the refurbished model is and how much useful software and hardware support it is likely to have left. Best Buy’s student-focused guidance similarly recommends weighing specifications, warranty coverage, and long-term usability (Best Buy Canada Blog).
Find out what “refurbished” means for this listing
Refurbishment is not one uniform process. It may be performed by a manufacturer, retailer, or third party, and the testing and repair standards can differ. A seller’s condition grade may describe cosmetic wear without fully explaining what was tested or replaced.

- This Certified Refurbished product is tested and certified to look and work like new. The refurbishing process includes functionality testing, basic cleaning, inspection, and repackaging. The product ships with all relevant accessories, a minimum 90-day warranty, and may arrive in a generic box. Only select sellers who maintain a high performance bar may offer Certified Refurbished products on Amazon.com.
- (3) USB 3.1 Gen 1 (Type-A), USB Type-C 3.1 Gen 2
- Headphone and microphone combo, HDMI, RJ-45
- Laptop and AC Adapter
- A GRADE/CAM
Read the listing and policy for the exact unit or program. Look for who refurbished it, what testing was done, how cosmetic condition is graded, and which accessories are included. Best Buy’s US outlet guide notes that refurbishment can be done by its repair centers, the manufacturer, or third parties, and that included accessories may be original or comparable replacements (Best Buy Outlet Buying Guide). Do not assume every refurbished laptop has the same charger, accessories, or refurbishment history.
Ask for the battery condition in writing
A refurbished laptop may have a battery with prior use. Battery life depends on the device and how it has been used; a cosmetic grade alone does not tell you its remaining capacity. Check whether the seller states a minimum battery-performance threshold, how it is measured, and what recourse you have if the battery falls short.

Some programs do publish a threshold, but it is not an industry-wide guarantee: Lenovo’s US certified refurbished program lists minimum 80% battery performance, and Best Buy’s comparison page describes 80% or better for its offering (Lenovo Certified Refurbished; Best Buy Canada Blog). Treat those figures as terms of those programs, not as a promise about other sellers or products.
Compare warranty coverage, not just its duration
Confirm which parts are covered, who handles a claim, when coverage starts, and whether the warranty is included with this particular listing. Refurbished warranties vary by brand, program, product, and region. For example, Lenovo says its certified refurbished devices receive a new standard one-year Lenovo warranty; Apple says each Apple Certified Refurbished product includes its standard one-year limited warranty. ASUS’s US refurbished terms, last updated April 14, 2022, list three months of limited warranty for covered complete units, batteries, and AC adapters. These are program-specific examples, not guarantees for every product from those brands; check the current terms for the exact item (Lenovo; Apple; ASUS).

For Apple products, the page describes a new battery and outer shell for refurbished iOS devices; that detail should not be assumed to apply to Macs. A new laptop may also have warranty coverage, so compare the actual new and refurbished product terms rather than assuming either option has better protection.
Check returns and the rules where you live
A return window can matter if the laptop arrives with a problem, feels different from the listing, or does not suit your work. Check the seller’s deadline, condition requirements, return shipping costs, and whether opened or used devices can be returned. These policies differ by seller and location.

Consumer protections are jurisdiction-specific. Microsoft’s certified refurbished page describes its UK program’s returns, while the EU’s Your Europe guidance explains guarantees and online withdrawal rights for consumers in the EU. Neither source should be treated as a rule for other regions (Microsoft UK; EU Your Europe). Check the terms and applicable rights for your own purchase.

Compare the refurbished listing with a new laptop that has a similar processor, memory, storage, display, and ports. Then account for any differences in warranty, included accessories, shipping, and optional protection plans. A lower sticker price is not necessarily a better value if the refurbished option needs an accessory or has materially weaker coverage.

There is no established market-wide savings percentage that makes refurbished the better choice in every case. Prices and available configurations change, so use current listings for the specific models you are considering rather than relying on a general discount claim.
Quick Recap
Choose based on your priorities
- Consider refurbished when the exact model meets your needs, the discount is meaningful against a comparable new configuration, and the seller clearly documents testing, condition, battery terms, warranty, and returns.
- Choose new when you prioritize unused equipment, a fresh battery, or current hardware, and the price difference is worth the added reassurance to you.
- Wait or compare further when the listing does not explain battery condition, refurbishment, accessories, or the remedies available if the laptop is not as described.
