If your NETGEAR router is acting up, start with a reboot—not a factory reset—unless you specifically need to erase its settings. A reboot preserves your WiFi setup; a factory reset removes personalized settings and means configuring the network again. The right choice depends on whether you have a connection problem, a forgotten admin password, or a saved configuration to restore.
Choose the least disruptive fix
| Option | Settings impact | Use it when | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reboot or power cycle | Preserves WiFi settings | You are troubleshooting a temporary connectivity problem | It does not recover a forgotten admin password or erase customized settings. NETGEAR’s reboot instructions |
| Admin password recovery | Intended to restore access without wiping router configuration | You forgot the admin password and recovery is available | Requires a supported model, its serial number, and the security answers chosen during setup. NETGEAR’s password-recovery instructions |
| Factory reset | Deletes personalized settings | Recovery fails or you need to return the router to its default configuration | You must set up the WiFi and admin credentials again; steps vary by model. NETGEAR’s factory-reset instructions |
| Restore a saved configuration | Replaces current settings with those in a backup | You have a usable router configuration backup | The router reboots, and devices may need to reconnect if the restored WiFi credentials differ. NETGEAR’s backup and restore instructions |
Reboot the router for a temporary connection problem
A reboot restarts the router without clearing its WiFi settings. NETGEAR documents several ways to do it:
- Power button: Turn the router off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it on.
- No power switch: Unplug the router, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
- App or web interface: Use the Nighthawk app or router web interface if available for your model.
Wait for the router to finish starting before testing the connection. If the problem remains and you can still sign in to the admin interface, consider saving a configuration backup before attempting a factory reset.
Recover a forgotten admin password without erasing settings
On supported Orbi and Nighthawk devices, NETGEAR’s password-recovery feature may let you regain admin access without resetting the router. It depends on recovery having been configured and on your ability to provide the requested information.
#1 Best Overall
- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- Open the relevant router login page:
orbilogin.localororbilogin.comfor supported Orbi systems, orrouterlogin.netfor supported Nighthawk routers. - Enter incorrect credentials three times to bring up the recovery prompts.
- Provide the router’s serial number and answer the security questions selected during initial setup.
- Follow the prompts to regain access and set a password if requested.
If the recovery feature was not enabled, the router does not support it, or you cannot answer the security questions, NETGEAR says a factory reset may be necessary. Its password-recovery article also describes a 15-second Reset-button hold as a fallback; use the exact instructions for your model rather than treating that timing as universal. Back up settings before a factory reset
If you can sign in and want to preserve the current configuration, save a backup file first. NETGEAR’s documented path is Advanced > Administration > Backup Settings. For Nighthawk Pro Gaming routers, use Settings > Administration > Backup Settings instead. The router saves settings to a .cfg file.

- Coverage up to 2,000 sq. ft. for up to 25 devices
- Ultrafast AX3000 speeds up to 3Gbps with WiFi 6 technology for uninterrupted streaming, HD video gaming, and web conferencing
- This router does not include a built-in cable modem. A separate cable modem (with coax inputs) is required for internet service.
- Connects to your existing cable modem and replaces your WiFi router. Compatible with any internet service provider up to 1Gbps including cable, satellite, fiber, and DSL
- Plug in computers, game consoles, streaming players, and more with 4 x 1G Ethernet ports
Restoring a backup replaces the router’s current settings with the saved configuration and reboots it. If the restored WiFi name or password differs from what devices currently use, those devices may need to reconnect. A backup is useful only if the saved configuration is the one you want to restore; it is not a way to preserve settings while also clearing them. NETGEAR backup and restore steps

Factory-reset the router using model-specific instructions
A factory reset is the disruptive option. NETGEAR Support says it deletes personalized settings, including the username, password, WiFi network name (SSID), and security settings. Its general instructions say to keep the router powered on, locate the recessed Reset or Restore Factory Settings button, and hold it for seven seconds with a paper clip or similar object. Release the button and allow the router to reset.

- WIFI 7 THAT KEEPS UP WITH A BUSY HOME: Up to 5 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, 1.2x faster than WiFi 6. MU-MIMO and OFDMA let multiple devices send and receive data simultaneously. Real-world speeds depend on your devices and plan.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,250 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- Check the label or documentation to identify the exact router model.
- Find that model’s reset procedure in its manual or NETGEAR support instructions. Button placement and timing can differ.
- With the router powered on, press and hold the specified reset control for the specified time. Do not force an object into the opening.
- Release the control and wait for the reset and restart to finish before beginning setup.
Do not assume every NETGEAR router uses a recessed button or the same hold time. For example, NETGEAR gives the DGN2000 and DG834Gv5 a different procedure: hold the Wireless On/Off and WPS buttons together for about six seconds, until the Power LED blinks red. The general reset article gives a seven-second hold, while the password-recovery article describes a 15-second fallback; these instructions are not interchangeable across models. Follow the instructions for your exact router. General factory-reset guidance · DGN2000 and DG834Gv5 reset procedure
Set up the router again after the reset
Once the reset is complete, follow the router’s model-specific setup flow. Create a strong, personal admin password and WiFi credentials, then reconnect devices using the new network details. Do not count on admin and password working after the reset: NETGEAR says many current models use those defaults, but newer products require the admin password to be changed during first setup. Business-router instructions can also differ, so use the guide for the relevant model and product line.
