On a computer or TV, adjust the screen using the device’s own brightness controls. HDR is a separate playback setting, not a substitute brightness slider.
Where to adjust Netflix brightness
The control depends on where you watch. Netflix’s instructions for dark shows and movies distinguish the mobile player control from brightness settings on computers and TVs.

Adjust brightness in the Netflix mobile app
- Start playing a show or movie in the Netflix app on an Android phone, iPhone, or iPad.
- Tap the screen to show the playback controls.
- Move the brightness indicator up or down.
You can also change the phone or tablet’s general screen brightness. Netflix’s mobile guidance says HDR Playback may be toggled in app settings when the account has a Premium plan and the device supports HDR; this option is conditional, not a general brightness control.
Adjust brightness on a computer
Netflix says, “The brightness setting isn’t available when watching on web browsers or TV displays.” In a computer browser, use the computer’s display controls or the controls on an attached monitor. The exact menu path varies by computer and display, so there is no universal Netflix browser setting to follow. Netflix’s Windows HDR requirements and Mac HDR requirements address HDR playback, not an in-player brightness slider.

Adjust brightness on a TV
Use the TV or streaming device’s own picture or brightness controls. Netflix recommends consulting the TV/device manual or contacting the manufacturer because menu steps differ by model. Some HDR-compatible TV setups have a separate HDR On/Off option in Netflix’s help or video menu, but Netflix notes that the toggle is not shown on every compatible TV. Its dark-picture guidance explains this distinction.
HDR is separate from brightness
HDR is a playback and display mode with hardware and system requirements. It can be relevant when an image looks too dark, but turning HDR off is not guaranteed to make the picture brighter. Check HDR only if the device, display, and Netflix playback setup support it.

On a Mac
Netflix’s Mac HDR guidance lists requirements that include the latest Safari, a compatible Mac and HDR-capable display, macOS Catalina 10.15.4 or later, and supported HDR settings. Connected cables or adapters must also support HDR. The page refers to Apple display settings such as the XDR Display preset or High Dynamic Range option, as well as turning off “Optimize video streaming while on battery.” These are HDR playback conditions, not brightness-slider steps; check Netflix’s current instructions because system labels and requirements can change.
On Windows
Netflix’s Windows HDR guidance lists Windows 11 with current updates, a supported browser or Netflix app, compatible graphics hardware, and an HDR-capable display with HDR enabled. Some Windows devices may also require a separately purchased HEVC extension for HDR or Ultra HD playback. That extension concerns playback-format support; it does not adjust brightness.

Netflix’s video-quality guidance describes HDR and 4K as depending on the device, plan, display, and connection requirements. Cable and HDCP requirements relate to supported playback quality, not to correcting a dim image.

- Use the brightness control for the device you are watching on: the Netflix player on mobile, or the screen’s own controls on a computer or TV.
- If HDR is available and relevant to your setup, check its setting separately. Do not assume that changing it will necessarily brighten the image.
- For TV menu steps, consult the TV/device manual or manufacturer support. If brightness or HDR adjustments do not resolve the issue, Netflix advises contacting Netflix support.
For Windows static, glitches, or monitor-connection playback issues, Netflix has separate video troubleshooting guidance that discusses refresh rate and monitor connections. Those steps address specific playback or display problems; they are not Netflix brightness controls.
