NetApp’s November 11, 2024 announcement covered three different product families—not one universal 60TB drive upgrade. It introduced new AFF A20, A30, A50, C30, C60 and C80 systems; added 60TB capacity-flash support and software changes to StorageGRID; and refreshed E-Series systems with configurations reported by Computer Weekly. Current E-Series documentation confirms 60TB NVMe support only on selected EF models and imposes specific disk-pool and RAID restrictions.
What NetApp announced
The announcement combined updates for unified enterprise storage, object storage and SAN arrays. Their roles, performance goals and supported drive configurations are different.
| Family | Announced change | Primary emphasis | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|---|
| AFF A-Series | A20, A30 and A50 | High-performance workloads | NetApp launch announcement; performance figures also reported by Computer Weekly |
| AFF C-Series | C30, C60 and C80 | General-purpose capacity and workload consolidation | NetApp launch announcement |
| StorageGRID | Version 11.9 plus 60TB capacity flash for SGF6112 | Object storage density and scale | NetApp launch announcement; density figure reported by Computer Weekly |

AFF A-Series and C-Series: new controllers and modular designs
NetApp positioned the A-Series for demanding, performance-sensitive workloads and the C-Series for capacity-oriented, general-purpose deployments. Computer Weekly reported newer CPUs, redesigned PCIe connectivity and modular designs that allow component upgrades while retaining the chassis.
Reported A-Series performance
Computer Weekly reported performance gains of 41% for the A20 versus the A150, 96% for the A30 versus the A250 and 153% for the A50 versus the A400. NetApp’s own launch claim was up to 2.5 times better performance for the new AFF A models. These are launch-era vendor or publication figures, not results from an independent, apples-to-apples benchmark.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the AFF change means
- AFF remains a unified platform for file and block workloads, unlike StorageGRID’s dedicated object-storage role.
- The announcement focused on controller performance and upgrade flexibility rather than a universal increase in drive capacity.
- NetApp UK and Ireland solutions director Grant Caley said that controller performance, rather than disk performance, is now the principal constraint in platform refreshes.
StorageGRID 11.9 and the SGF6112 60TB flash option
StorageGRID 11.9 added scalability features including higher bucket counts and metadata-only or data-only node options. The SGF6112 all-flash object-storage appliance also gained support for 60TB capacity flash.
Density impact
NetApp said 60TB drives double the SGF6112’s object-deployment density. Computer Weekly reported nearly 2PB of capacity in a 3U SGF6112 enclosure. The two statements describe launch-era density claims; they do not establish usable capacity after formatting, replication, erasure coding or metadata overhead.

Workload fit
SGF6112 is an object-storage appliance. Its 60TB support should not be interpreted as a drive option for AFF arrays or as a generic enterprise SSD recommendation. Capacity planning must account for the StorageGRID protection scheme, node layout and software configuration.
E-Series changes and the limits of the 2024 capacity figures
Computer Weekly reported E4012 with 264TB of raw capacity and E4060 with 1.3PB, with expansion figures of 2.1PB and 6.6PB respectively. The current E-Series page reviewed does not corroborate those exact 2024 configurations, so treat them as reported launch-era figures rather than current specifications.

| Current model group | 60TB support | Documented constraints |
|---|---|---|
| EF50 and EF80 | Listed | Mixed shelves containing 30TB and 60TB drives are placed in a single Dynamic Disk Pool; legacy RAID is not supported for these drive configurations. |
| EF300C and EF600C | Listed | 30TB/60TB configurations use Dynamic Disk Pools without legacy RAID; expansion shelves are not supported. |
Drive mixing, expansion and pool behavior vary by model and SANtricity release. A 60TB capacity number alone does not prove that a drive will work in another E-Series array.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “60TB drive support” does—and does not—mean
It can mean higher raw density
Fewer physical drives can provide a given raw capacity, potentially reducing rack space, cabling and operational overhead. NetApp claimed up to 95% floor-space savings and up to 97% power savings when modernizing from hybrid flash; those are vendor claims with stated context, not universal results.

It does not mean interchangeable media
- Do not install a generic 60TB SSD in an AFF, StorageGRID SGF6112 or E-Series array based only on capacity.
- Do not transfer the SGF6112 60TB support claim to E4012, E4060 or unrelated arrays.
- Do not assume legacy RAID is available where current documentation specifies Dynamic Disk Pools only.
How to evaluate an upgrade
- Identify the family and exact model. Decide whether the requirement is unified file/block storage, object storage or SAN.
- Check the supported-drive matrix. Confirm the exact 60TB part, controller, shelf and SANtricity or StorageGRID release.
- Calculate usable capacity. Apply RAID or Dynamic Disk Pool rules, erasure coding, replication, spare capacity and metadata overhead.
- Validate expansion limits. EF300C and EF600C documentation states that expansion shelves are not supported; EF50 and EF80 have different pool behavior.
- Obtain a supported configuration through NetApp or a partner. Enterprise purchasing requires compatibility, support and lifecycle validation rather than a generic retail drive purchase.
How to read the performance and savings claims
The 41%, 96%, 153%, 2.5-times, nearly-2PB, floor-space and power figures are attributed launch claims from NetApp or Computer Weekly. No independent lab test or current, cross-family benchmark establishes an apples-to-apples ranking of AFF, StorageGRID and E-Series. A single Atruvia customer testimonial describing 80% lower rack space should not be generalized to every deployment.
Bottom line for buyers
NetApp’s update was a broad platform refresh, not a single 60TB product line. Choose AFF A-Series or C-Series according to performance and consolidation needs, StorageGRID SGF6112 for dense object storage, and E-Series for SAN workloads. Treat 60TB support as a model- and software-specific qualification—especially on EF50, EF80, EF600C and EF300C—and verify the exact supported configuration before ordering.
