There is no defensible, workload-independent performance winner among Neo4j, NebulaGraph, and JanusGraph in the available evidence. A 2023 study reports that Neo4j performed especially well on larger datasets under its experimental conditions, but that result is not a universal ranking. Your query mix, graph shape, hardware, memory and storage behavior, and—in JanusGraph’s case—storage backend can change the outcome.

What do the published comparisons actually show?

The available studies offer useful points of reference, but they do not establish a current, apples-to-apples performance ranking for all three systems. Their results should be read in the context of the study’s workload, setup, and date.

Evidence What it evaluated or reported What it can establish
IEEE SmartTechCon study (2023) Compared graph database performance and scalability using query response time, data-loading time, and memory use. Neo4j, JanusGraph, and NebulaGraph were among the systems; the abstract reports that Neo4j performed especially well on larger datasets. A result under that study’s experimental conditions. The available abstract does not provide enough numerical results or setup detail to determine how well it predicts a particular deployment.
Applied Sciences study (2023), “Experimental Evaluation of Graph Databases: JanusGraph, Nebula Graph, Neo4j, and TigerGraph” Reports using the Linked Data Benchmark Council Social Network Benchmark (LDBC SNB) and describes laptop hardware. A named benchmark and study setup, but the available material does not expose complete tables and methodology for a detailed current comparison. Do not infer an unshown ranking.
NebulaGraph community comparison (circa 2020) Reports import and query measurements at 10 million, 100 million, 1 billion, and 8 billion edges. Its visible table includes Neo4j, HugeGraph, and NebulaGraph. Historical, community-published measurements for the listed systems and sizes. It does not provide a corresponding JanusGraph row, so it is not a three-way comparison or a current neutral ranking.

The first study’s reported advantage for Neo4j on larger datasets is worth noting, but not extrapolating beyond its tested conditions. The other surfaced comparisons likewise do not provide a complete, current, independently reproducible three-way result with aligned versions, hardware, data, and query mix.

Why can performance change so much between workloads?

A database that is faster for one operation can be slower for another. Before comparing products, define what “performance” means for your application and describe the workload the system must handle.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Query pattern and graph shape: distinguish point lookups, neighborhood expansion, multi-hop traversal, aggregation, and analytical scans. Record graph size, degree distribution, skew, and whether a few supernodes dominate traversals.
  • Read and write behavior: measure ingest separately from steady-state writes, read latency, mixed concurrency, and tail latency. A load-time result does not by itself predict interactive query performance.
  • Working set and storage: note whether the active graph fits in memory, how much data is read from disk, and which storage media are used.
  • Deployment shape: record whether the test is single-machine or clustered, the node count, network distance, and fault-tolerance requirements.
  • Operational constraints: account for consistency and availability needs, query-language fit, and the team’s ability to configure and operate the chosen system.

What are the main tuning differences?

System Performance factors documented in the available sources What to account for in a comparison
Neo4j The Operations Manual discusses memory configuration, vector-index memory, indexes, garbage collection, Bolt thread pools, Linux filesystem tuning, disks and RAM, schema statistics, execution plans, and space reuse. Its system-requirements guidance says large-graph performance is generally memory- or I/O-bound, while graphs that fit in memory can be compute-bound; random-read workloads favor low-seek-time storage such as SSDs. Measure with realistic memory allocation, indexes, query plans, and storage. Treat hardware guidance as a starting point, not a universal sizing prescription.
JanusGraph JanusGraph scales graph storage and processing across machines and depends on its storage backend. Its documentation lists backends including Apache Cassandra, Apache HBase, and Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition; BerkeleyDB JE is non-distributed and is typically used for testing or exploration. Traversal batching can reduce backend-request overhead when visiting many vertices, but can use more memory and delay initial results. The documented default batching behavior changed with version 1.0.0. Name the backend, JanusGraph version, and batching configuration. Test the batching trade-off with the traversal and result size your application actually uses.
NebulaGraph The available evidence includes a historical community comparison and a 2023 cross-system study, but does not establish enough current, independently reproducible operating detail for a present-day ranking against the other two. Use a version-pinned test with your own data and query mix; keep any benchmark conclusion tied to its specific setup and date.

Neo4j’s Operations Manual summarizes its performance section as describing “factors that affect operational performance and how to tune Neo4j for optimal throughput.” Its system-requirements guidance states: “Performance is generally memory or I/O bound for large graphs, and compute-bound for graphs that fit in memory.” These are useful reminders that hardware and configuration are part of the comparison, not fixed background details.

How should you run a fair comparison?

Benchmark the candidate systems on a representative workload rather than relying on a single published score. Keep the test controlled enough to compare products, but realistic enough that its results inform your deployment.

  1. Pin the environment. Record exact product versions and configurations, hardware budget, node count, storage, and network arrangement. Use comparable resources and document any differences that cannot be avoided.
  2. Use the same representative data. Match graph size, degree distribution, skew, and supernode behavior to the expected application. Record the loading process and measure data-loading time separately from query performance.
  3. Define queries and result sizes. Include the important point lookups, traversals, aggregations, or scans. Specify expected result cardinality and include realistic read, write, and mixed-concurrency patterns.
  4. Separate cold and warm behavior. State how caches are handled and report cold-cache and warm-cache results separately where both matter. Avoid comparing one system’s warmed run with another system’s cold run.
  5. Measure more than averages. Report p50, p95, and p99 latency, throughput, resource consumption, and loading time. Include failure behavior and the effect of the intended concurrency level.
  6. Repeat and preserve the setup. Run tests consistently, retain the configuration and query definitions, and investigate outliers or changing execution plans before treating a result as meaningful.

This protocol is a practical way to control the factors exposed by the studies and product documentation; it is not a benchmark procedure prescribed by any one of those sources.

Which system should you shortlist?

  • Shortlist Neo4j when its query model and operational fit suit your application, and you can validate the memory, indexing, execution-plan, and storage behavior that your workload needs. The 2023 study’s larger-dataset result is evidence for that study, not a guarantee for yours.
  • Shortlist JanusGraph when its distributed storage and processing model fits your requirements and you are prepared to select and tune a backend. Benchmark the backend and traversal batching together rather than treating JanusGraph as if it had one fixed storage profile.
  • Shortlist NebulaGraph when it meets your functional and deployment requirements, then validate performance with a current, version-pinned workload test. The historical community comparison is not enough to establish a present-day three-way performance lead.

Choose based on measured behavior for your graph, queries, hardware, and operating constraints. The available published evidence supports workload-specific conclusions, not a universal ordering of these three databases.
