If you need a German IP address without paying, the free plans identified with German locations in the reviewed 2026 sources are Windscribe, PrivadoVPN, and hide.me. Windscribe and PrivadoVPN are listed with 10 GB per month; hide.me is listed with unlimited data. Proton VPN Free also offers unlimited data, but its free tier does not include Germany. Choose based on the location and allowance you actually need, and treat speed-test results as a dated snapshot rather than a promise.
Which free VPNs have German servers?
Gizmodo’s September 11, 2026 comparison lists German free locations for Windscribe, PrivadoVPN, and hide.me. TechRadar also lists Germany among Windscribe’s free locations, while Tom’s Guide includes Germany in its descriptions of the free plans from PrivadoVPN and hide.me. Free-tier country lists can change, so check the provider’s current app or plan details before relying on a particular location.
| VPN plan | German location on free tier | Free data reported | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windscribe | Yes | 10 GB per month | Gizmodo lists unlimited free devices. |
| PrivadoVPN | Yes | 10 GB per month | Tom’s Guide describes 13 city locations across 10 countries, including Germany; some locations may be virtual, meaning the IP appears to be in the selected country even when the server is not physically hosted there. |
| hide.me | Yes | Unlimited | Tom’s Guide reports seven free countries, including Germany. |
| Proton VPN Free | No | Unlimited | Its free plan is an option for unlimited-data use that does not require a German exit location. |

How much data do free VPNs allow?
In Gizmodo’s September 2026 comparison, Windscribe and PrivadoVPN are listed with 10 GB per month, while hide.me and Proton VPN Free are listed as unlimited. For a German IP, that makes hide.me the unlimited-data option among the free plans identified with German locations. Proton VPN Free’s unlimited allowance does not solve the German-location requirement because Germany is excluded from its free tier.

A 10 GB monthly cap can be used up quickly by sustained video streaming or large downloads. If you mainly need occasional browsing, it may be enough; if you expect to use the connection heavily, check the current allowance and monitor usage in the app. Plan terms can change, so confirm the cap before depending on it.
What do the German VPN speed tests show?
Gizmodo’s September 2026 test used a 190.36 Mbps baseline and reported the following results for German servers. These are results from that publication’s test setup—not expected speeds for every user or a guarantee from any provider.

| Free VPN | German-server speed in Gizmodo’s 2026 test | Ping in the same test |
|---|---|---|
| PrivadoVPN | 188.82 Mbps | 41 ms |
| Windscribe | 185.76 Mbps | 35 ms |
| hide.me | 176.18 Mbps | 44 ms |
PrivadoVPN had the highest measured download speed among those three in this test, while Windscribe recorded the lowest ping. The results are close enough that they do not establish a reliable real-world winner: the comparison does not provide enough consistent detail about repeated trials, test hardware, or time-of-day sampling to support a broader ranking.
Why your result may differ
TechRadar notes that free servers can become crowded, causing capacity constraints and inconsistent speeds, especially at busy times. Your result can also depend on your distance from the server, internet provider, device, VPN protocol, and the time and method of testing. Run a test from your own connection if speed matters; do not assume a published one-time result will carry over to your location.

Can a free VPN stream German TV or Netflix Germany?
Do not choose a free VPN on the assumption that it will unlock a particular streaming service. In Gizmodo’s tests, none of the free services it tried opened Netflix Germany. Public broadcasters may sometimes accept a free German IP, but access can vary by broadcaster, VPN server, and time. A successful connection in one test is not a guarantee of continued access.
When does Proton VPN Free make sense?
Proton VPN Free is relevant if unlimited data and privacy-oriented general use matter more than connecting through Germany. Gizmodo and TechRadar report that Germany is not included in its free locations, even though paid Proton plans include German locations according to TechRadar. Tom’s Guide also describes the free plan as limiting manual server choice; VPN Editor Mo Harber-Lamond writes, “Proton VPN’s biggest limitation is that you can’t choose which server to connect to.” That caveat concerns Proton VPN Free, not every Proton plan.

Is a refund-period VPN really free?
No. Gizmodo describes NordVPN as a paid service with German locations in Frankfurt and Berlin and a 30-day refund period. A refund window means paying upfront and then seeking a refund under the provider’s applicable terms; it is not a permanent free plan. Check the current refund conditions before subscribing, and consider this route only if you are comfortable with the payment and eligibility requirements.
