NASA and IBM released an open-source lunar foundation model in September 2026 to help researchers analyze Moon observations from different instruments, missions and spatial scales. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter’s long-running record is a major foundation, but the model combines aligned data from multiple lunar missions; its training set is not simply 17 years of LRO observations. It can help map craters and volcanic features and estimate where ice may be more likely. It does not directly detect water or certify a landing site.

What is the NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model?

It is a multimodal, multi-resolution model for lunar remote sensing: it is designed to work with different kinds of observations, rather than only one image type or instrument. NASA says its pretraining used high-resolution imagery and geophysical data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), GRAIL, Lunar Prospector and JAXA’s SELENE mission. The LRO record is an important part of the long-running observation base, but the released model brings together data from several missions and instruments.

The counts describe related assets from different perspectives. IBM’s announcement describes an open dataset with more than 30 spatially aligned layers from nine instruments across four missions, including tens of thousands of images and maps. The technical paper describes SomBench, a geographically partitioned corpus of nearly two million co-registered lunar tile bundles across 11 modalities at 1-meter-per-pixel and 100-meter-per-pixel scales. Those figures are not interchangeable: one counts dataset layers and instruments, the other tile bundles and modalities. IBM’s release and the research paper explain their respective counts.

The model card identifies the architecture as a ViT-B encoder-decoder trained from scratch on SomBench. It conditions on acquisition geometry and jointly trains on meter- and hundred-meter-scale tiles. The released checkpoint uses an Apache-2.0 license; the model card documents a workflow through TerraTorch. The model card links the checkpoint and companion code.

What can the model map or estimate?

Craters and terrain

Researchers can use the model to support crater mapping. Craters preserve evidence of the Moon’s surface history, and mapping them can inform later studies of terrain and possible infrastructure locations. That makes the output useful for scientific analysis, not a substitute for engineering assessment or mission hazard review.

Irregular mare patches and volcanic history

The model can help segment and map irregular mare patches, unusual volcanic features that are relevant to questions about lunar thermal and volcanic history. Their ages and interpretation remain scientific questions; a map is evidence for researchers to examine, not a settled explanation of how or when the features formed. IBM Research’s explainer discusses these initial applications.

Sun Earth Moon Orbital Model with Light, Kids Solar System Model Astronomical Science Educational Kits
  • The model is an excellent way to illustrate Earth's rotation, the planet's revolution around the sun, the seasons of the year, and the orbit of our moon - all in one!
  • This device can serve to illustrate to a young child that Earth spins on its axis, that the moon orbits Earth every 28 days, and the Earth orbits the sun once a year,Can help child's astronomy class better understand moon phases, eclipses, season, etc.
  • You can learn about the 24 Solar Terms used by farmers in China,It's pretty easy, it comes in English.
  • There is a raised button on the sun model, Remove the wire and push the button, the sun will give out light.
  • Note: This item will be interesting to kids who are starting to get excited about astronomy, but It is not suitable for rigorous astronomy scientific research!

Polar ice prospectivity

For the lunar poles, the model estimates ice prospectivity: where conditions indicated by terrain, temperature and other geophysical products may favor ice. Its target is a knowledge-driven fuzzy-overlay prospectivity map, not a direct measurement of water ice. “The AI found water” would therefore overstate what this model establishes.

How strong are the reported results?

NASA and IBM report task-specific benchmark comparisons, not one score that captures overall lunar-science ability. In the comparisons summarized by IBM, the model’s advantage varies by task, spatial scale, metric and baseline. The headline figures below are research-team benchmark results, not measurements of mission performance.

Task and comparison Reported result
Polar ice prospectivity versus a SwinV2-B ImageNet model Up to 22% lower RMSE, as reported by NASA and IBM researchers in 2026.
Irregular mare patch extent mapping versus the SwinV2-B ImageNet model 3% better mapping, as reported by NASA and IBM researchers in 2026.
Crater results at approximately 100-meter context scale versus SwinV2-B, using half the training data Nearly 19% better results, as reported by NASA and IBM researchers in 2026.
Meter-scale crater detection versus a state-of-the-art SwinV2-B comparator Comparable accuracy; the release describes greater efficiency and lower fine-tuning costs, rather than a broad accuracy win.

These percentages should not be generalized to other tasks or scales. The paper and model card report that the best model and baseline are nearly tied for meter-scale NAC crater detection, and that results vary across tasks. The authors also report means and standard deviations across multiple seeds. To judge a result for a particular project, compare the same task and resolution, evaluation metric, training-data fraction, input coverage and adaptation strategy—and check whether the target is a proxy estimate or a calibrated quantity. IBM’s benchmark summary and the paper provide the comparison context.

What are the model’s limitations?

  • It does not certify landing sites. The model card says the release has not been validated for landing-site certification or hazard clearance.
  • Its geographic positioning may be unreliable. It may recover local structure while missing absolute values; generated latitude and longitude can be substantially off.
  • Generated fields are qualitative. Multimodal generation is described as a qualitative probe, not calibrated scientific output. Synthetic fields should not be treated as validated measurements.
  • Its demonstrated scope is lunar. It has not been evaluated beyond the Moon or on products absent from SomBench.

These cautions matter when moving from a research benchmark to a scientific claim: a plausible-looking output is not automatically a geodetically accurate map, a measured physical quantity or an operationally safe decision. The model card details intended use and limitations.

How can researchers access it?

NASA says the model is openly released on Hugging Face. Researchers can obtain the checkpoint and code, review the Apache-2.0 license, and use the documented TerraTorch fine-tuning workflow. The paper reports release of the pretrained checkpoint, benchmark datasets and fine-tuning code. This is a research tool, not a turnkey mission system.

In the evaluated tasks, the model card recommends LoRA as a sensible default in many cases. Full fine-tuning performed best for the ice-prospectivity benchmark, while results with a frozen encoder varied by task. These findings are starting points for experiments, not guarantees for a new dataset or a particular research question.
