For a simple backup of one computer, an external hard drive is usually the easier choice: run backups on a schedule and disconnect the drive between sessions when practical. Choose a NAS when you want a shared, always-available local destination for several devices. Either way, RAID or a second copy kept only at home is not enough on its own: keep versioned backups and a separate off-site copy.
NAS vs. external hard drive: the practical differences
| Decision | External hard drive | NAS |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | A straightforward local backup target for one computer or a simple workflow. CISA recommends external drives for data stored locally on a device. | A shared, network-attached destination that can centralize backups from multiple devices, depending on the software and configuration. |
| Setup and upkeep | Connect it to the computer, configure a backup schedule, and disconnect it when a backup is not running. This is generally the simpler category-level setup. | Requires an enclosure, compatible storage drives, network and backup configuration, and ongoing management. |
| Exposure while connected | A connected drive may be accessible to ransomware on the computer. Disconnecting it between backup sessions reduces that exposure. | A network-accessible NAS may be reachable from other devices on the network. Use versioned backups and protect another copy independently; RAID or snapshots alone are not a complete backup plan. |
| Multiple devices | A drive attached to one computer is a simple target for that computer’s backups; backing up several devices may require a deliberate workflow. | Can serve as a common local destination for several devices, subject to compatible backup software and correct configuration. |
| Protection if the home is affected | A drive stored at home can be lost to the same fire, natural disaster, or theft as the computer. | A NAS kept at home faces the same home-wide risks. |
| Cost | No current price comparison was established for this category. | No specific model or current price was verified; account for the enclosure, drives, and management. |
The choice is about workflow, not which device is inherently a backup. Both can hold a local copy. Neither protects that copy from every failure affecting the computer and the home.
When an external hard drive makes more sense
Choose an external drive if you mainly need to back up one computer and value a removable, direct-attached destination over shared network access. Configure recurring backups, retain versions where your backup software allows it, and disconnect the drive when it is not actively backing up. CISA advises this because ransomware may reach a connected drive and delete or corrupt its backups: CISA’s guidance on protecting data stored on devices.
Capacity should be based on the amount of data you need to protect and how much backup history you want to retain. There is no universal capacity recommendation here; the right size depends on your files and backup method.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When a NAS makes more sense
A NAS is a better fit when several household devices need a shared local backup destination, or when you want storage available over the home network without moving a drive between computers. That convenience comes with more setup and maintenance. Check that each device’s backup software can use the NAS as a destination, and confirm drive compatibility with the specific enclosure.
RAID can help maintain availability after some drive failures, but it does not create an independent backup. Synology warns that drive failure or a RAID crash can still result in data loss, and recommends keeping a separate backup: Synology’s NAS backup guidance. Treat snapshots and synchronization similarly: they can be useful tools, but do not substitute for another independently recoverable copy.

Build a backup plan that covers more than drive failure
A practical framework is 3-2-1: keep three copies of important data, use two types of storage, and keep one copy off-site. Synology describes this approach and notes that local backups do not protect against fire, natural disaster, or theft affecting all equipment: Synology’s backup and data protection overview.
- One computer: Use scheduled backups to an external drive, then maintain another copy separately, such as a properly vetted cloud backup or a drive stored off-site.
- Several devices: Use a NAS as the local destination if it suits your backup software and household workflow, then back up the NAS data to an external drive kept elsewhere or to a suitable cloud service.
- Either setup: Keep backup versions so you can recover from accidental deletion or corruption, and make sure a separate copy is not exposed to the same event as the primary device.
Choose the arrangement around the number of devices, data volume, how often files change, how quickly you may need to restore them, and how reliably you will maintain the schedule. A backup that is not running or cannot be recovered is of little use.

Choose an off-site copy that actually supports your devices
Cloud backup can provide an off-site copy, but check product support for the data source rather than assuming a computer backup service also covers a NAS. Backblaze says its Computer Backup product does not support backing up network drives or NAS devices. It documents a separate NAS-to-cloud route through B2 and supported vendor applications, including Synology Cloud Sync and QNAP Hybrid Backup Sync 3: Backblaze’s NAS backup documentation.
Before relying on a service, verify that it supports your computer or NAS workflow, the files and capacity you need to protect, and the restore process you would use. A cloud destination counts only if the data you need is actually being backed up there.

Protect the backup itself
Encrypt computers and removable media, and store recovery keys somewhere you can access if the original device is lost. CISA includes encryption and safe handling of recovery keys in its device data protection recommendations. This matters especially for a drive that may leave home for off-site storage.
