Developers can use n8n Cloud or run a self-managed instance; the right choice depends on who should operate the infrastructure and which plan, source-control, and licensing requirements apply. This guide explains how to evaluate those choices and where to verify details that change over time.
What n8n does—and where code fits
n8n describes itself as fair-code workflow automation software for connecting applications through APIs and manipulating data with little or no code. A workflow lets a team represent an automation as connected steps rather than building every integration from scratch. For developers, the important distinction is that the visual approach is not the only way to work: n8n’s product materials also describe JavaScript and Python in workflows and support for custom nodes. See the n8n documentation, n8n product site, and project README.
This combination can suit teams that want a visible map of an automation but still need code for data transformation or specialized behavior. It does not mean every integration or business rule will fit a visual step, nor does a product description establish measured reliability, speed, or accuracy. Decide how you will test workflows, review code, manage credentials, and handle failures rather than assuming the platform removes those engineering responsibilities.
When it is a plausible fit
- You want to connect applications or APIs in repeatable workflows.
- Some team members prefer visual configuration, while developers need a route to write code or extend behavior.
- You can assign responsibility for credentials, testing, maintenance, and failure handling—whether to your team or a managed service arrangement.
What the evidence does not establish
Official materials describe AI capabilities, including combining AI actions with human approvals and testing AI workflows with real data. Those are vendor-described features, not independent performance results. Official materials also return inconsistent integration counts, so a fixed number should not be used to judge coverage; check the current integrations directory for the specific services and operations your workflow needs.

Choose n8n Cloud or self-hosting
n8n documents a managed Cloud route as well as self-managed use, including npm and Docker as ways to get started. These are different operating models, not evidence that one is universally better. In Cloud, the service is managed; with self-hosting, your team takes on operating the deployment. The official docs and repository README describe the available routes.
| Consideration | n8n Cloud | Self-hosted n8n |
|---|---|---|
| Infrastructure operation | Managed service route; verify the current plan and service terms. | Your team operates the instance and its hosting environment. |
| Setup and maintenance | Less infrastructure setup for your team; plan and account requirements still apply. | Your team handles deployment, ongoing maintenance, and operational decisions. |
| Deployment control | Less direct control over the underlying deployment. | More control over the environment, with corresponding operational responsibility. |
| Best decision test | Choose when you value a managed route and your required features and plan terms fit. | Choose when you have the capacity and reason to operate your own instance. |
The sources do not establish a hardware model, server size, or hosting provider that every self-hosted installation requires. Avoid choosing infrastructure from a generic recipe: first determine the workflow load, availability needs, data and access requirements, and the operational capacity of the team, then consult the current installation documentation for version-specific prerequisites.

Plan the workflow like software
Before building, write down what starts the workflow, what data moves between services, what a successful completion means, and what should happen when a step fails. Then separate credentials from workflow logic and decide who may change or approve production behavior. These are engineering practices, not a claim that n8n automatically enforces every control.
- Define the contract. Identify the input, expected output, side effects, and conditions that should stop the workflow.
- Build the simplest path first. Connect the required services, then add code only where the visual steps do not express the transformation or behavior you need.
- Test representative data. Include ordinary inputs and relevant edge cases. For AI workflows, n8n describes testing with real data; decide how to protect sensitive information and how a person reviews consequential actions.
- Design failure handling. Decide how the team will detect a failed run, avoid unsafe repeats of side effects, and recover or reprocess data. Verify the specific error-handling mechanisms against the documentation for your deployed version.
- Review before production. Have an owner for credentials, changes, and rollback; test the production-bound behavior in a controlled way before relying on it.
These steps make the automation’s assumptions explicit. They also help distinguish a workflow that is merely easy to assemble from one that is safe to operate.

Put workflows under source control carefully
n8n’s source-control tutorial describes an environments workflow based on Git. It says an instance owner or admin must enable and configure the feature. A notable distinction: the tutorial says n8n pushes the current saved workflow version, not the published version. Do not assume that a push represents only what is live to users. Read the current source-control environments tutorial and verify its behavior for your edition and version.
The tutorial also describes using a GitHub Action and the n8n API to pull changes after a push to a production or main branch. Treat that as a deployment pattern to evaluate, not a turnkey guarantee: define who can merge, how credentials are handled, what validation happens before deployment, and how you will respond to an unsuccessful change. Confirm the currently supported API behavior and feature availability before wiring it into a production pipeline.

Check license, plan, and commercial use before committing
The project README identifies the Sustainable Use License and n8n Enterprise License. For a specific commercial case, the n8n Help Center says hosting and managing clients’ workflows and credentials in your own internal n8n instance requires an Enterprise license. That statement matters to consultants and agencies considering a service built around a shared instance, but it does not resolve every business model. Review the current license terms and ask n8n about your exact arrangement rather than extending that one case into a blanket legal conclusion. Sources: project README and n8n Help Center licensing guidance.
Plan features can also affect an architecture. The pricing page indicates that named versions, workflow diffs, public API, and AI Assistant availability vary by plan or deployment. Exact current prices and feature mappings should be checked on n8n’s pricing page before purchase. Compare the specific capabilities you need, execution allowances, deployment eligibility, and team requirements; do not select a tier based on an old price snippet or an assumed feature matrix.

Use n8n for screenshot workflows—or call a screenshot API directly
A screenshot can be one output in a larger automation—for example, a team may want to capture a page as part of a reporting or review process. This is a use case to design, not a claim that a particular n8n node or integration is built in. Check the integrations and current n8n documentation for the method that fits your workflow. If the screenshot itself is the main task, a purpose-built API can avoid managing a separate browser capture setup.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. Its one-request API can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Example using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details. It accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents, with tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan to try it.
Troubleshoot decisions before they become incidents
- A required integration or operation is missing: Verify the exact service and action against the current integrations directory. Do not rely on a headline integration count, which is inconsistent across official materials.
- A workflow differs between development and production: Check the source-control configuration and whether the version pushed is saved or published. The tutorial specifies the saved version; confirm behavior for your edition and version.
- A deployment recipe does not match your instance: Recheck the installation instructions for your version and chosen npm, Docker, or Cloud route. The available evidence does not establish universal resource sizing or a one-size-fits-all host.
- A plan appears to lack a needed feature: Check the live pricing page for the exact feature, deployment eligibility, and execution allowance rather than inferring entitlement from another plan or older page.
- Your agency wants to host client automations: Review the licensing guidance for this exact arrangement before offering it; the Help Center identifies hosting and managing clients’ workflows and credentials on your internal instance as requiring Enterprise.
- An AI action needs a human checkpoint: Design and test the review boundary explicitly. The product site describes human approvals, but your workflow still needs a clear definition of which actions require approval and how exceptions are handled.
Make the choice on ownership, not on hype
n8n is worth evaluating when a project benefits from visual API workflows plus code-level extension. Choose Cloud or self-hosting according to your team’s appetite for infrastructure responsibility; validate source-control behavior, current plan entitlements, and licensing against official pages before making the decision durable. For a self-hosted deployment, count ongoing operation as part of the cost. For a managed route, verify that the live terms cover the workflow and team you intend to run.
