Choose n8n if you need the option to self-host, want greater control over infrastructure, or prefer pricing based on workflow executions. Choose Make if you want to build visually in a managed service and can forecast usage by counting module actions. Neither is automatically cheaper or better: a single workflow run can use one n8n execution but many Make credits, so compare a real workflow against the plan limits you need.
How n8n and Make differ
Both platforms connect apps and APIs to automate workflows, but they package and meter that work differently. n8n calls automations workflows and bases paid-plan usage on monthly workflow executions, regardless of workflow complexity. Make calls them scenarios and generally counts each module action as a credit. That difference affects cost estimates, while hosting and workflow-building preferences help determine which product fits.

How to compare the cost of your workflows
Do not compare an n8n execution directly with a Make credit as if they were the same unit. A workflow that runs once might trigger many module actions in Make; n8n’s paid pricing unit is the workflow execution, regardless of complexity. Make says a scenario may consume from a few credits to thousands, depending on what it does.
Estimate n8n usage
- Count how many times each workflow is expected to run in a month.
- Add the runs together and compare the total with the execution allowance on the n8n plan you are considering.
- Check the plan’s concurrency and execution limits as well as any governance features your team requires; an execution allowance alone does not establish whether peak workload behavior will fit.
Estimate Make usage
- Map a representative scenario and count its module actions for a typical run. Non-AI app operations generally use one credit per operation.
- Multiply the typical credits per run by monthly runs. Include branches or other scenario paths that actually execute rather than assuming every run uses the same number of credits.
- Check how AI is connected and metered. Third-party AI app modules generally use one credit per operation while the provider charges separately for tokens. Make AI Provider usage is based on tokens and operations; built-in AI usage varies by connection type. Make’s credit guide explains these distinctions.
Use your expected monthly volume, not a single run, when comparing plans. If a workflow has conditional paths or variable workloads, estimate typical and high-usage cases so that a plan that fits an average month does not hide a likely capacity problem.

Published plan figures to check before choosing
The official pricing pages checked October 4, 2026 displayed the following examples. Prices, allowances and plan features can change, and these are vendor-published figures rather than independent cost comparisons. Confirm the live plan page, billing period, currency and limits before subscribing.

The Make paid-tier amounts above are the pricing page’s displayed 10,000-credit example; they do not make 10,000 credits equivalent to any fixed number of n8n executions. The Make page describes capabilities by tier, including scheduling, execution, variables, search and team features, but the exact entitlements and limits should be checked for the plan you intend to use.

Hosting, control and maintenance
When n8n self-hosting makes sense
n8n documents both cloud use and self-hosting. With self-hosting, you select where the instance runs and take responsibility for operating its infrastructure. That can suit organizations that need control over deployment or have the technical capacity to maintain their own environment. Compare the full operational burden—not just the subscription line—with the cost of a managed service. n8n’s documentation describes self-hosting as a privacy-focused option, but your actual data location and protections depend on how you deploy and configure it. Read n8n’s documentation.
When a managed service is preferable
If your priority is to build without taking on infrastructure operations, Make’s visual scenario service may be a better fit. The cited Make pricing information describes its builder and plans but does not establish a self-hosted deployment choice. If data residency, customer-managed infrastructure or a particular hosting location is mandatory, verify those requirements directly with the vendor before committing.

Workflow building and integrations
Make foregrounds a no-code visual workflow builder. Its pricing page lists integrations, routers and filters, and describes tier-dependent features. This is vendor-described functionality, not an independent usability test. It may appeal if your team wants to map scenarios on a visual canvas, but you should still build a representative workflow and verify that the logic and maintenance experience suit the people who will own it.
n8n describes a tool for connecting apps and APIs and manipulating data with little or no code. Its documentation also describes customizable workflows and custom nodes. That offers flexibility for teams comfortable working with APIs or extending integrations, but it does not mean every workflow is code-free or that a needed connector behaves exactly as you require.

For either tool, check the specific trigger and action you need—not only the number of listed apps. Confirm required fields, authentication, pagination, webhook behavior, API limits and error handling against your intended workflow. Neither a broad connector count nor a platform’s general API support guarantees the precise integration behavior your project depends on.

- Workload capacity: n8n’s execution allowance and concurrency; Make’s credit allowance and the scenario’s actual action consumption.
- Timing: minimum schedule interval, peak-time execution behavior and whether the plan supports the cadence your process needs. Make’s listed Free tier has a 15-minute minimum interval between scheduled runs.
- Execution constraints: duration limits, retries, queue behavior and any restrictions on simultaneous or long-running work.
- Visibility and retention: execution logs, log retention, audit needs and whether logs can be streamed or exported where required.
- Access and governance: team roles, project controls, SSO, environments, version control and external secret-store support. n8n lists features including SSO/SAML/LDAP, environments, Git version control, queue mode, external secret stores and log streaming in higher tiers; confirm the exact tier and configuration.
- Resource limits: storage, data transfer and any other plan allowances relevant to your workflow.
These checks matter more than a feature headline: a platform can support a capability while the tier you budgeted for does not include it.
AI features: check the workflow and the meter
Both products list AI-related capabilities. n8n’s pricing page lists AI and agent capabilities; Make lists AI applications, AI Agents and AI Toolkit. Their availability does not establish output quality, reliability or suitability for your use case. Test the specific workflow and review how it handles data, credentials, errors and human oversight.
AI can also affect the cost estimate differently from ordinary app actions. In Make, third-party AI modules generally consume one credit per operation while token charges come from the AI provider; Make’s AI Provider and built-in AI usage follow different metering details. Check the credit guide for the connection type you plan to use rather than counting every AI operation as an ordinary one-credit action.
Which tool fits your situation?
Consider n8n if
- You need a documented self-hosted option and can operate the infrastructure, or you want the choice of hosted cloud.
- Your costs are easier to forecast by counting total workflow executions than by estimating every action within a run.
- You need customization, API-oriented workflows or custom nodes and have people able to maintain them.
Consider Make if
- You prefer its visual scenario builder and a managed-service approach.
- You can map scenario actions closely enough to estimate credit consumption, including AI-related usage.
- The needed connectors and the scheduling, team and execution features are available on a plan that fits your requirements.
These are conditional fits, not claims that one platform is categorically easier, faster or cheaper. The sensible comparison is one real workflow, its monthly run frequency, the required deployment model and the plan gates that matter to your team.

A practical decision process
- Choose the deployment boundary: decide whether managed hosting is acceptable or whether you need to run the automation instance yourself.
- Sketch one representative workflow: include its triggers, actions, branches, data volume, expected failure handling and any AI steps.
- Estimate both meters: count monthly n8n executions and estimate Make credits from module actions and AI usage.
- Verify the integrations: test the exact app operations and API behavior required, rather than relying on connector totals.
- Match plan gates: compare cadence, concurrency, execution duration, retention, collaboration, governance and resource allowances against actual requirements.
- Recheck live pricing: confirm billing terms, currency, usage volume and included features on the official pages before purchase.
