Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For local development on macOS, choose the database your application and deployment environment require. Match the engine and major version where possible; installation convenience or an abstract claim that one database is “better” is not a substitute for compatibility. If your project gives you a choice, compare how you want to install and run the server, how your team reproduces that setup, and whether your schema depends on particular features such as JSON indexing.
Start with the application’s production database
Check the project’s deployment configuration, documentation, migration files, and team setup scripts before installing anything. Identify the required database engine and major version, then use a compatible local setup. Different engines can vary in SQL behavior, available features, drivers, and framework integration, so a database that starts successfully may still fail to reproduce the application’s real behavior.
- If production uses MySQL, use MySQL locally unless the project explicitly supports another engine for development.
- If production uses PostgreSQL, use PostgreSQL locally for the closest match.
- If the project supports both, check its documented versions, migrations, driver behavior, and any engine-specific queries before choosing.
No project, framework, or workload is specified here, so there is no universal winner on compatibility, ease, or speed.
Compare the macOS installation and server workflows
| Choice | Documented macOS routes | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| PostgreSQL | The PostgreSQL project lists an EDB interactive installer, Postgres.app, Homebrew, MacPorts, and Fink. | Choose based on how you want to install, start, stop, and manage the server, and how closely that matches the team’s setup. |
| MySQL | Oracle documents a native DMG/package workflow and compressed TAR archive installation. | The native package setup includes a root-password step and a choice about starting the server after configuration. The archive route allows installation in a chosen location without administrator privileges, according to Oracle’s manual overview. |
PostgreSQL: app, installer, or package manager
The PostgreSQL macOS packages page lists multiple ways to install PostgreSQL, including an EDB interactive installer, Postgres.app, and package managers. The EDB installer includes the server, pgAdmin, and StackBuilder; EDB provides that installer, so it is distinct from the PostgreSQL project’s own documentation.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Postgres.app is a native menu-bar app that does not require an installer. The PostgreSQL project says opening it makes a server available for connections and closing it shuts the server down. That lifecycle can suit a developer who prefers to manage the local server by opening and closing an app. Package-manager or installer workflows may fit better when the team manages setup through scripts or established system services.
The page includes brew install postgresql@15 as a versioned example. It is an example, not a recommendation to install PostgreSQL 15 now; check the project’s supported version and your macOS compatibility before choosing a release.

MySQL: native package or archive
Oracle’s native package installation guide describes a DMG-based setup that configures the root password and lets you choose whether the server starts after configuration. The documented package flow installs files in a version- and platform-specific location under /usr/local and creates a /usr/local/mysql symlink in its example. Exact paths and compatibility depend on the package and version you use.
Oracle also describes installing from a compressed TAR archive into a location you choose without administrator privileges. Consult the instructions for the exact MySQL release you intend to run before following an archive-based setup.

Avoid conflicting MySQL installations
Do not casually install MySQL through both Homebrew and Oracle’s native package. Oracle’s macOS installation notes say the package installer does not recognize Homebrew MySQL as an upgrade target. The two installations can live in different locations and attempt to use the same ports, creating service or connection conflicts.
If you are switching from a Homebrew installation to the native package, Oracle advises stopping the Homebrew service before running the installer. Keeping one installation method is simpler unless you intentionally manage separate data directories, services, and ports.

Check the features your application actually uses
Feature differences matter when application behavior depends on them; they are not a complete ranking of either database. For JSON-heavy applications, inspect the actual query and indexing pattern rather than choosing based on the presence of a JSON type alone.
Transactions and InnoDB
MySQL’s InnoDB engine supports transactions, foreign keys, row-level locking, multiversion concurrency control (MVCC), and indexes, as listed in Oracle’s InnoDB introduction. This is a reminder to compare the specific engine and configuration the application uses rather than assume MySQL lacks transactional features.

JSON query and index requirements
MySQL supports a JSON data type, but its CREATE TABLE documentation says a JSON column cannot be indexed directly. For an index on a scalar value inside JSON, MySQL documents using an indexed generated column that extracts that value. Index use also depends on the expression matching the generated column, as described in Oracle’s optimizer documentation.
PostgreSQL 18 documents GIN indexes for JSONB in its JSONB indexing section. The documented approaches differ: PostgreSQL provides JSONB index mechanisms, while MySQL’s described approach uses a generated column for an extracted scalar. Which fits depends on the application’s queries and indexing needs; the documentation alone does not establish a speed or suitability winner for every workload.
Make the local setup reproducible
Once you have matched the production engine and chosen an installation route, decide how the team will repeat the setup. A GUI app or installer may be convenient for an individual workstation; package-manager commands or development scripts may better suit a team that wants a shared, repeatable procedure. This is a workflow choice, not a tested claim that one route is inherently more reliable.
Quick Recap
- Record the database engine and major version expected by the project.
- Document the installation method, server start/stop procedure, and any required local configuration.
- Keep the local setup aligned with the project’s scripts and onboarding instructions.
- For MySQL, document which installation method owns the server so a second installation does not unexpectedly compete for the same ports.
