MySQL Shell is an advanced command-line client and code editor for MySQL. Unlike a SQL-only client, it can also run JavaScript and Python, expose X DevAPI for relational and document data, administer InnoDB high-availability deployments through AdminAPI, and run utilities for tasks such as upgrade checks and data movement.
It is a command-line tool, not a graphical interface. The separate MySQL Shell for VS Code extension has its own interface and documentation.
What MySQL Shell adds to the familiar MySQL client
MySQL Shell supports SQL execution as well as scripting in JavaScript and Python. That makes it useful for both interactive database work and repeatable operational tasks: you can issue SQL, write code that uses MySQL APIs, or run Shell utilities from a supported programming mode. Oracle describes it as an “advanced client and code editor for MySQL.” Oracle’s MySQL Shell 26.7 manual documents its capabilities.
Its main additions are distinct rather than interchangeable: SQL mode runs SQL statements; X DevAPI offers application-facing relational and document data operations over X Protocol; AdminAPI provides administrative operations for MySQL high-availability deployments; and the utility framework supports selected migration, import/export, and diagnostic workflows.

Which language mode should you use?
MySQL Shell has one active language mode at a time. In interactive use, switch modes with the commands below. In batch use, select a mode with the corresponding command-line option.

The backslashes are part of the interactive commands. In JavaScript and Python modes, the global util object exposes Shell utilities; it is not available in SQL mode. If a utility command is rejected because it is being entered as SQL, switch to JavaScript or Python first. See Oracle’s active-language documentation and utilities reference.

Use X DevAPI for application data access
X DevAPI is available when MySQL Shell connects to MySQL Server through X Protocol. From JavaScript or Python, it supports working with relational data as well as document data. This is a development interface, not the same function as AdminAPI: X DevAPI is for data access, while AdminAPI is for administering supported MySQL deployments. The MySQL Shell manual covers the Shell APIs and their use.
Use AdminAPI for cluster and replica-set operations
AdminAPI is accessed through the dba global variable in MySQL Shell. Its methods support deployment, configuration, and administration of InnoDB Cluster, InnoDB ClusterSet, and InnoDB ReplicaSet. It also handles some MySQL Router-related account tasks. These are lifecycle and operations capabilities, not a general replacement for SQL administration.

AdminAPI requires a TCP connection; socket connections are not supported. The documentation distinguishes full deployment from sandbox deployment. A sandbox is for local learning and experimentation, not production: Oracle states, “An AdminAPI sandbox deployment is not suitable for use in a full production environment.” Consult the AdminAPI overview before deploying or changing a real environment.
Choose utilities by operational task
Utilities extend Shell beyond interactive queries. The current manual groups them by task, but each has its own options and operational implications; follow the documentation for the exact utility and version rather than assuming that every import, dump, or load procedure is interchangeable.

- Assess upgrades: run upgrade checks to identify issues to address before upgrading.
- Move data: use the relevant JSON import, table export, parallel table import, data-copy, or instance, schema, and table dump/load utilities for the migration shape.
- Work with binary logs: use the documented binary-log dump and load utilities where that workflow applies.
- Collect diagnostics: use diagnostic utilities when gathering information for troubleshooting.
- Manage authentication: use account password and authentication-management utilities where appropriate.
For procedures and supported options, refer to Oracle’s MySQL Shell Utilities reference. Utilities are available through the util object in JavaScript and Python modes, not SQL mode.
Install the version that fits your server and platform
MySQL Shell is installed separately and is available for 64-bit Windows, Linux, and macOS. The reviewed 26.7 manual highly recommends MySQL Shell 26.7.0 for GA MySQL Server 8.0 or later; the live download page surfaced 26.7.1 packages when checked. Since package versions and compatibility guidance can change, check the MySQL Shell download page and the release notes for the specific version before installing. The installation guide lists supported platforms and installation approaches.

Is MySQL Shell the right client for your work?
Choose MySQL Shell when the work benefits from JavaScript or Python scripting, X DevAPI, AdminAPI, or its operational utilities. If you only need to run SQL, those additional features may not matter to your workflow. If you require a graphical interface, MySQL Shell itself is not that interface; evaluate a GUI separately. Official documentation establishes Shell’s capabilities, but does not establish a universal best client for every user.
