That makes those visual transitions play faster, which can make navigation feel snappier; it does not speed up the phone’s processor or fix every cause of lag.
Which setting can make Android feel less laggy?
The likely setting is Window animation scale or Transition animation scale in Developer options. Android’s documentation says a lower scale makes the corresponding animation play faster: Android Developers: Configure on-device developer options (page last updated October 1, 2026).
This is most relevant when the delay you notice is a visual transition—for example, a window taking a while to appear or a screen change feeling drawn out. Faster animation can feel more responsive, but it is not evidence that the phone’s underlying hardware is performing better. The title does not establish which device or control was involved, or a measured before-and-after result.
How to find and change animation scales
Enable Developer options
On Android 4.2 and later, Developer options must be enabled before they appear. The exact menu path varies by device. Android’s guide gives these examples:

- Pixel: Settings > About phone > Build number.
- Recent Samsung Galaxy phones: Settings > About phone > Software information > Build number.
- Open the Build number entry and tap it seven times, until the developer message appears. Follow any on-screen prompts, such as entering your screen lock.
- Return to the previous screen and open Developer options. Its location or name may differ on your device.
- Look for Window animation scale and Transition animation scale, commonly listed under a Drawing section in the documented layout.
- Lower a scale and try navigating through the phone. Keep the change if the quicker transitions feel better; restore the original value if you prefer the default motion.
There is no universally established best value in the cited documentation. Choose based on how the phone feels to you rather than assuming one setting suits every device.
What the animation controls change
Window animation scale affects window animations, while Transition animation scale affects transitions between screens or activities. Android’s guide explains that lower values make these animations faster. Android Open Source Project settings definitions also describe Animator duration scale: its default is 1, and setting it to zero makes animator-based animations end immediately. That control is not listed alongside the first two in the developer guide’s documented Drawing section, so available controls and labels can vary by device build: AOSP Settings.java, Pie branch.

What changing animation scale will—and will not—fix
Changing these scales affects animation playback speed. It may help when a phone seems sluggish because transitions take time to finish, but it does not establish a fix for slow app launches, freezing, slow internet, or general unresponsiveness. The cited Android documentation does not say that changing animation scale frees storage, improves battery health, or increases processing power.
If the phone remains slow beyond visual transitions, use broader troubleshooting rather than treating animation scales as a general cure.

What to check if the phone is still slow
Google Android Help recommends basic checks such as restarting the phone, checking for Android updates, updating apps, checking available storage, and investigating whether a downloaded app is causing the problem. Its instructions and settings can vary by phone: Google Android Help: Speed up a slow Android device.
Check storage and apps
Google says, “Your phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free.” The page does not state a publication date. Treat this as a possible troubleshooting threshold, not a guarantee that every phone below 10% will lag or that clearing space will solve every slowdown.

To check whether a downloaded app may be responsible, Google recommends starting the phone in safe mode, which temporarily turns off downloaded apps. If the problem disappears in safe mode, an app is a likely cause; remove recently downloaded apps one at a time and check whether performance improves. Safe-mode steps differ across manufacturers, so use the instructions for your phone model.
Escalate persistent problems carefully
If restarting, updates, storage checks, and app troubleshooting do not resolve the issue, Google advises contacting the phone’s manufacturer or carrier. A factory reset removes data and apps; Google advises backing up first, so it should not be a casual first step.
