It was repeatedly postponing the subjects he was curious about—game development, Rust, C, and C++—because he assumed he had no time. Looking back, he saw that he had made room for what felt urgent while leaving those interests on hold.
What Jayan regrets putting off
Jayan describes a familiar pattern in his own life: he wanted to explore game development, Rust, C, and C++, but kept telling himself he would get to them when he had more time. None came with a deadline, so each was easy to defer.
His regret is about postponing self-directed learning, not about graduating or choosing a particular career. As he put it, “I had time. I just spent it on things that felt more urgent in the moment, and let the stuff I actually wanted to learn sit on a shelf indefinitely.”
Why “I don’t have time” can become a permanent delay
In Jayan’s reflection, the issue was not simply a packed schedule. It was how he prioritized: responsibilities and tasks that felt pressing came first, while personally interesting projects could always wait. He expected a future stretch of free time to arrive, but that expectation kept the learning on the shelf.

This is his account, not evidence that graduates generally share the same regret. It also does not suggest that responsibilities should be ignored. The tension he identifies is between handling those responsibilities and making some space for interests that do not impose a deadline.
His response: start with the time you have
Jayan’s proposed change is modest: set aside a small, consistent amount of time for passion projects while continuing to meet existing responsibilities. Rather than waiting for a perfect period with more free time, begin with the time and energy currently available. His advice is captured in one sentence: “The next best time is today.”

That is a personal approach, not a guaranteed formula or a measured prescription. The point is to stop treating an ideal future schedule as a prerequisite for beginning.

If you recognize Jayan’s pattern, choose one interest and make the first step small enough to fit your actual week. For example, pick a tiny game-development experiment or a short exercise in Rust, C, or C++. Keep the scope limited, decide when you will return to it, and adjust the plan around your responsibilities rather than waiting for them to disappear.

The useful measure is whether you are giving the interest a real place in your routine—not whether you match someone else’s schedule or finish a major project quickly.
