It may be offline, running but disconnected from its platform, or connected without receiving the messages you expect. Check those layers in order: confirm the process and its logs, inspect the platform connection and event access, verify credentials and hosting behavior, then test a reply in the affected channel.
First, identify what “silent” means
“Always-on” describes a hosting or process goal; it does not establish that the bot is handling messages. Telegram bot code runs on the owner’s server, while a Discord bot using the Gateway also needs a functioning persistent WebSocket connection. Start by separating three possible failures:
- The process stopped: the bot application or its container is no longer running.
- The process is running but disconnected: the application is alive, but its connection to the platform failed.
- The connection is up, but messages do not work: the platform is not delivering the expected events, authentication has failed, or the bot is not replying as expected.
These checks apply differently depending on your platform and hosting setup. Discord and Telegram examples below are platform-specific, not universal instructions for every bot.
Check whether the bot process is running
Use the process or service controls for the host where the bot runs, and inspect both current and recent application logs. If the bot runs in Docker, Docker’s troubleshooting guidance recommends docker info as an operating-system-independent check of whether Docker is running. Service status utilities or tools such as ps and top can provide additional evidence. A healthy Docker daemon does not prove that the bot process inside a container is healthy.

Look in the bot’s own logs for startup failures, crashes, authentication errors, or repeated connection attempts. If ordinary logs do not show enough detail, enable the relevant runtime’s debug logging; Docker also documents daemon debugging for investigating runtime activity. Check timestamps as well as error messages: a log stream that ends abruptly can help distinguish a process that stopped from one that is still active but stuck elsewhere.
If the process is alive, inspect its platform connection
Discord Gateway bots
Discord Gateway connections are persistent WebSockets, which require more lifecycle handling than simple HTTP requests or interactions such as slash commands. The Discord Gateway documentation describes a Hello event that supplies the heartbeat interval. The client must send heartbeats using the interval it receives and check for heartbeat acknowledgements. If it does not receive an acknowledgement, Discord says the client should close the connection and reconnect. Use the live Gateway value, not an interval copied from an example payload: the documentation’s 45,000-millisecond sample is illustrative, not universal.

Also check whether the client can resume after a disconnect. Discord’s Gateway supports resuming from the last sequence number so missed events can be replayed. Whether that recovery works depends on the client’s connection handling and the session state; a running process by itself does not show that the Gateway session is healthy.
Other platforms
For a Telegram bot, the bot’s code runs on the owner’s server and makes requests to the Bot API. Check the application logs and the bot’s API connection using the tools appropriate to your implementation. Do not assume a Discord Gateway heartbeat procedure applies to Telegram or to another platform.

Check whether the platform delivers the messages you expect
Discord intents
Discord Gateway intents control which event types an application receives, and most events require intents. Compare the events your bot expects with the intents configured for its connection, using the Gateway documentation. A bot can appear online while not receiving the particular event needed to trigger a reply.
Telegram group privacy
In Telegram groups, privacy mode can make a working bot seem unresponsive. Telegram’s bot features documentation says privacy mode is enabled by default for most bots, with group admins as an exception, and limits which group messages the bot receives. Test whether the bot receives a message addressed in a way it is permitted to see. Telegram recommends disabling privacy mode only when necessary.

Verify credentials and the affected channel
Authentication and channel behavior are separate checks from process status. Microsoft’s general bot troubleshooting guidance recommends ruling out authentication problems and testing the channels the bot will use. Reproduce the failure with the same credentials, channel, and authentication flow implicated by the report.
For Telegram, the bot token authorizes Bot API requests and should be stored securely. Replace or regenerate it only when there is evidence of a credential problem. If you do change it, update the running deployment as well; otherwise the bot will continue trying to authenticate with the old token.

Check whether the host sleeps or stops the service
Review the hosting plan’s process-lifecycle settings, including whether the service can sleep when idle. Microsoft notes that some hosting platforms offer settings to prevent sleep. For Azure AI Bot Service Web Apps, the Always On setting is available on most, but not all, service plans. Check the behavior of the specific plan, app, and deployment rather than relying on the setting’s name alone.
When comparing hosting setups, look for continuous-process behavior, access to service and application logs, restart controls, recovery from platform disconnects, and a way to test the deployed bot in its actual channel. The available guidance does not establish a universal best provider or hosting price.
Test recovery end to end
After making a change, send a test message through the same route users say is broken. Confirm both that the bot receives the message and that it sends a reply. Microsoft recommends testing with the Bot Framework Emulator before deployment, then checking connectivity and the intended channels after deployment. A local or emulator test can help isolate application behavior, but it does not prove the deployed host, credentials, or channel are working.
Telegram says BotFather can alert owners to certain unusual reply patterns in popular bots. Treat such alerts as a limited signal, not a general-purpose uptime monitor; the documentation says the response-rate context is approximately 300 requests per minute and may change. It is not a promised service threshold or a universal measure of bot availability.
